A predictive model of suicidal ideation in Korean college students

Abstract: Findings suggest a model of suicidal ideation focused on perspective, protective factors; previous research provided a negative perspective with focus on risk factors for suicidal ideation. Findings can be used to develop diverse programs to decrease suicidal ideation in college students and help them to adjust to college life.

“…Interestingly, the previous literature established that a few positive external (social) and internal (psychological) facets (indexed as sociopsychological constructs), i.e. , social support, self-resilience, belongingness, subjective well-being, mindfulness, positive self-appraisals and attributional style, optimism, emotional stability (ES), cohesiveness, and cognitive and coping flexibilities, had a linear negative association with suicidal behavior among nonclinical populations (Kim and Cha, 2018; Sher, 2019; Brailovskaia et al, 2020; Kato, 2022). However, it has been disputed whether each of these attributes of interest may indeed be interpreted as a suicidal resilience factor.…”

“…Considerable research has been conducted to identify the risk variables that triggered suicidal thoughts and behavior in the past few decades; nevertheless, suicidal intervention strategies concentrated on these risk factors have provided upsetting results, and a rising trend has been observed (Sher, 2019; Kessler et al, 2020). Moreover, the notion that only a very few individuals who encounter constant stress in daily life executed suicide demonstrated that other protective aspects should be taken into account to better comprehend suicidal psychopathologies, which have been investigated relatively less than risk variables (Kim and Cha, 2018; Siegmann et al, 2018). However, reinforcing strength-based interventions focused on protective factors rather than weakness-oriented approaches along with relocating the attention toward resilience to suicide might help in enlightening innovative suicide preventive strategies among high-risk groups of medical students.…”
