Since the experimental discovery of magnetic skyrmions achieved one decade ago 1 , there have been significant efforts to bring the virtual particles into all-electrical fully functional devices, inspired by their fascinating physical and topological properties suitable for future low-power electronics 2 . Here, we experimentally demonstrate such a deviceelectrically-operating skyrmion-based artificial synaptic device designed for neuromorphic computing. We present that controlled current-induced creation, motion, detection and deletion of skyrmions in ferrimagnetic multilayers can be harnessed in a single device at room temperature to imitate the behaviors of biological synapses. Using simulations, we demonstrate that such skyrmion-based synapses could be used to perform neuromorphic pattern-recognition computing using handwritten recognition data set, reaching to the accuracy of ~89%, comparable to the software-based training accuracy of ~94%. Chip-level simulation then highlights the potential of skyrmion synapse compared to existing technologies. Our findings experimentally illustrate the basic concepts of skyrmion-based fully functional electronic devices while providing a new building block in the emerging field of spintronics-based bio-inspired computing.
Purpose: This study compares differences in stress, depression and suicidal ideation between nursing and students of other academic disciplines. Method: Nursing students (n=105) and students of other majors (n=148) were surveyed on the degree of personal stress, depression and suicidal ideation. Participants were recruited from three universities in cities S and C in Korea. Data were collected from May 1 to 20, 2013. Measurement tools were the Revised Life Stress Scale for College Students, Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale(CES-D), and Scale for Suicide Ideation(SSI). PASW Statistics 18 was used for descriptive analysis, homogeneity test(chi-square distribution) and ANCOVA. Results: The level of stress among nursing students was lower than that of students in other majors. Among the subcategories of stress, however, stress among nursing students arising from the student-faculty relationship was higher than that of their non-nursing counterparts. Conversely, differences in the prevalence of depression were notsignificant between nursing students and non-nursing students. Ultimately, it was revealed that there exists a strong correlation among stress, depression and suicidal idea for nursing students. Conclusion: Developing stress and depression management programs for nursing students is highly recommended.
Findings suggest a model of suicidal ideation focused on perspective, protective factors; previous research provided a negative perspective with focus on risk factors for suicidal ideation. Findings can be used to develop diverse programs to decrease suicidal ideation in college students and help them to adjust to college life.
We investigated the effect of predisposing, enabling, need factors, and health behaviors on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with multimorbidity according to Andersen’s model. This study is a secondary analysis of population-based cross-sectional surveys. Data from 328 patients with multimorbidity (≥3 co-occurring chronic diseases) from the 6th/7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were analyzed using logistic regression. Patients ≥65 years, without private insurance, with poor subjective health, unmet medical needs, and/or limited activity were more likely to experience mobility problems. Self-care problems were more likely among those without private insurance and/or with limited activity. Patients lacking living security, with poor subjective health, limited activity, and/or who smoked were more likely to experience problems performing usual activities. Pain/discomfort was more likely among females, Medicaid beneficiaries, and patients with limited activity and/or with poor subjective health. Patients with poor subjective health, limited activity, and/or unmet medical needs were more likely to experience anxiety/depression. The investigation of HRQoL in multimorbidity should consider predisposing, enabling, need factors, and health behaviors. Interventions addressing movement restrictions and personalized care based on HRQoL domains should be prioritized.
