Objective: To compare the oral health status in two groups of oncohematological patients in a reference hospital in the south of Brazil.Methods: A retrospective cohort analytical study based on medical records review of adult's in patients with onco-hematological diseases followedup from April/2013 to April/2015. For data inclusion criteria it was considered in patients with onco-hematological disease, considering the death cases. Exclusion data criteria were absence or questionable information on medical records, inaccessibility of medical records as well inconsistency between information described by nursing team, medical team, dental team and others. The inpatients were divided into two groups: (A) without dental supportive care-considering inpatients with onco-hematological diseases who received dental assistance only in emergency cases; (B) with dental supportive care-considering inpatients with onco-hematological disease who received dental assistance regularly during hospitalization. The data collection consisted of gender, onco-hematological malignancies, presence of oral complications related to chemotherapy, and dental emergency during the hospitalization period. A descriptive analysis, Qui 2 and Fischer Tests were performed.Results: A total of 114 inpatients were enrolled, 55 (48.2%) on Group A and 59 (51.7%) on Group B. There was a male predominance in the sample (n=65). The Acute Myeloid Leukemia (17.5%) and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (13.1%) were the major oncohematological malignancies diagnosed. Oral candidiasis was the major complication related to chemotherapy treatment in both groups. There was an association between regular dental supportive care and the diagnosis of oral complications due chemotherapy treatment (p<0.001). Conclusions:The presence of the dentists in the hospital environment has led to enhanced diagnostic accuracy in our sample, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of inpatients. Further researches on this nature are important to augment performance of dental practice in the hospital setting.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one ofthe most prevalent healthcare-associated infections (HAI) andcauses of death in intensive care units (ICUs), and studies haveshown its relation to oral health. Aim: To report the impact ofthe incorporation of dental professionals into multidisciplinaryICU staff on the incidence of VAP. Methods: A retrospectiveobservational study was carried out to collect and analyzehealth indicators of patients in the ICUs from 2011 to 2018 andto differentiate these indicators between the periods beforeand after the participation of dental staff in the ICU. This studywas approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results:The average number of monthly ICU admissions was 105.89 ±169.72, and the discharge was 105.21 ± 168.96, with a monthlyaverage number of deaths within 24 h of 38.61 ± 62.27. Theaverage number of monthly HAI-related deaths decreasedfrom 2011 to 2018, followed by a reduction in cases of HAIper month. The average monthly number of HAIs relatedto mechanical ventilation (MV) decreased, and the samewas observed for the infection density of HAIs related to MV(p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, there was a significantdecrease in the number of HAIs related to MV (p = 0.005).Conclusion: Although a reduction in the number of admissionsor complexity of cases was not observed in the study period,multidisciplinary staff practices were essential for controllingHAIs and the presence of dental professionals can assist in thecontrol of HAIs related to MV.

Introducción y objetivo: La presencia del cirujano dentista en el equipo de salud multidisciplinario de atención hospitalaria es esencial a través de su actuación en procedimientos que se hacen necesarios para el mantenimiento de la salud bucal y general del paciente. Identificar los aspectos odontológicos de los pacientes, determinar la condición bucal y las lesiones más prevalentes en la cavidad bucal de los pacientes internados, en la Clínica Quirúrgica del Hospital Universitario de la UFMA, Unidad Presidente Dutra. Materiales y métodos: La investigación fue realizada a través de un estudio descriptivo, con base en datos secundarios y análisis cuantitativo. La muestra fue compuesta por 1475 pacientes internados en la clínica quirúrgica del Hospital en el año 2017. Los datos obtenidos fueron analizados cuantitativamente, presentados en números absolutos y porcentuales, y empleado el test del chi-cuadrado (α = 0,05). Resultados: En relación a los hallazgos clínicos, la prevalencia de caries fue del 11,32% de los pacientes. El cálculo / biopelícula fue detectado en el 26,92%. La movilidad dental tuvo una prevalencia del 7,46%. La raíz residual estuvo presente en el 20% de los pacientes La higiene oral regular fue prevalente con el 73,54%, seguida por higiene oral deficiente 19,74% y buena con el 6,72%. Conclusión: Los resultados muestran que las alteraciones bucales son frecuentes en la cavidad bucal de pacientes hospitalizados, con baja frecuencia de buena higiene oral. Así, la actuación del equipo de odontología en el equipo multiprofesional es fundamental por caracterizar esa población y relacionar con las variables clínicas, atendiendo en los casos que es necesario e informando la importancia del mantenimiento de una buena salud bucal.
