INTRODUCTION: The present study identified and described scientific production on primary and secondary prevention of oral cancer worldwide. This is an integrative review of the literature, focusing on the description of oral cancer prevention experiences.METHODS: The search was performed in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the descriptors: early diagnosis, oral neoplasms, primary prevention and secondary prevention. We found 225 articles and selected 22 after evaluation, divided into three themes.RESULTS: Four articles awareness-raising and population-tracking campaigns with the valorization of the role of the dental surgeon and the involvement of health teams. The non-invasive diagnostic methods, considered in fifteen articles, addressed the implementation of new strategies for the early detection of this pathology by different diagnostic methods. The reorganization of the health system (3 articles) encompassed the permanent education of oral health professionals, epidemiological surveillance and reorganization of health services with integration of health care levels. The great majority of the reviewed experiences showed positive results in the prevention of oral cancer. An exception was the active search for suspected cases in the population, since the cost benefit did not compensate the expenditure with human resources for this purpose. The non-invasive methods reported are useful for screening but do not substitute the biopsia for diagnosis.

Oral health technicians in Brazilian primary health care: potentials and constraints

Different perspectives on the role of mid-level workers in health care might represent a constraint to health policies. This study aimed to investigate how different agents view the participation of oral health technicians in direct activities of oral healthcare with the goal of understanding the related symbolic dispositions. Theoretical assumptions related to inter-professional collaboration and conflicts in the field of healthcare were used for this analysis. A researcher conducted 24 in-depth interviews with general dental practitioners, oral health technicians and local managers. The concepts of Pierre Bourdieu supported the data interpretation. The results indicated inter-professional relations marked by collaboration and conflict that reflect an action space related to different perspectives of primary care delivery. They also unveiled the symbolic devices related to the participation of oral health technicians that represent a constraint to the implementation of oral health policy, thus reducing the potential of primary health care in Brazil.

Objetivo: Traçar o perfil sociodemográfico e profissional dos sujeitos/enfermeiros (as) da rede de Atenção Primária à Saúde do município de Recife - Pernambuco, considerando a importância desse profissional na assistência à saúde na Atenção Primária. Metodologia: Pesquisa quantitativa descritiva. Trata-se de um recorte da pesquisa de campo da dissertação de mestrado sobre o conhecimento do enfermeiro da atenção primária quanto à sexualidade no climatério. Após aprovação do Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa com Seres Humanos da Universidade de Pernambuco, recebido em 01 de Dezembro de 2014, CAAE: 39337714.1.0000.5207, foi emitida a carta de anuência pela Prefeitura da Cidade do Recife para que a pesquisa pudesse ser iniciada. Resultados: Dos 250 enfermeiros (as) entrevistados, 90,3% são do sexo feminino, 45,3% dos enfermeiros (as) tinham idade entre 30 e 39 anos, 60% desses são casados, 87% tem um ou dois filhos e a maioria são católicos. Quanto ao tempo de formação em enfermagem, a maioria possui mais de 10 anos de formandos, e 72,5% graduou-se em universidade pública e apenas 3,7% não possuem pós-graduação. O tempo de atuação profissional em estratégia da saúde da família da maioria dos enfermeiros (as) é de mais de 10 anos (66,8%). Conclusão: Torna-se imprescindível identificar o perfil desses profissionais, com o intuito de traçar melhorias no desempenho das atividades exercidas, para adotar medidas que aprimorem o atendimento da população assistida.
