Show more

“…Cichla species have obtained ecological and economic relevance in Amazonian impoundments (Santos & Oliveira Junior, 1999;Camargo & Petrere Jr., 2004) and in reservoirs located elsewhere . This trend is also occurring in Lajeado reservoir, where C. piquiti has been increasingly targeted by commercial and sport fisheries.…”

“…In reservoirs, Cichla finds suitable habitats for feeding and breeding, considering that prey fish are abundant (Pelicice et al, 2005;Luz-Agostinho et al, 2006) and shallow areas provide shelter and nesting sites. In fact, Cichla has colonized and spread in reservoirs where it is native (Santos & Oliveira Junior, 1999;Camargo & Petrere Jr., 2004) and non-native (e.g., Gomiero et al, 2009;Espínola et al, 2010;Luiz et al, 2011).…”

“…The dominance pattern observed in the two sectors is related to the predominance of Hemiodus unimaculatus in both areas. This small-bodied, rstrategist species is opportunistic and relatively tolerant to habitat disturbance, and is thus common in low-quality habitats, such as reservoirs (Santos 1999;Vieira 2000). Overall, then, the similarities in the structure of the lake and reservoir communities appears to reflect the influence of disturbed and low quality habitats (Mérona 1986(Mérona , 1987Clarke and Warwick 1994;Bianchi et al 2000;Bailly et al 2005;Suzuki et al 2005;Agostinho et al 2007).…”
