Show more

“…Such absence of a conservation-driven purpose may be related to the fact that nowadays fishing is more a leisure and culturally oriented activity than a source of livelihood income in Guarda do Embaú. The tainha fishery, besides being a widespread economic activity among southern Brazilian fishing communities (Chaves and Robert 2003;Pina and Chaves 2005;Peterson et al 2008), may also be maintained mainly for its cultural value, as observed in this study and in other southern Brazilian coastal communities (Medeiros 2001;Rebouças 2008).…”

“…An increase in fishing pressure during this period has also been recorded in other southern Brazilian coastal regions where fishers also catch the tainha using cast nets (Medeiros 2001;Peterson et al 2008). Higher fishing productivity related to seasonal migration of mugilids has been observed in several other coastal regions, such as Scotland (Beare et al 2005), northeastern Mexico (Ibáñez and Gutiérrez Benitéz 2004), and along the southern and southeastern coasts of Brazil (Pina and Chaves 2005;Seckendorff and Azevedo 2007;Miranda and Carneiro 2007;Peterson et al 2008). Since an increase in the number of individuals exploiting a given resource can lead to conflicts over the space used and resources exploited (Gotelli 2001), increased fishing activity during May in Guarda do Embaú may potentially lead to competition between local and occasional fishers.…”

“…According to Ditty and Shaw (1996), mullets are said to be semi-catadromous, with the recruitment of its juveniles to lagoons and estuaries, following a period of offshore spawning. Mullets are important economic resources that support many small communities through both fishing and aquaculture (Pina & Chaves 2005;Katselis et al, 2005). The extraordinary adaptability of the family Mugilidae, has resulted in species that are found mainly in the clear and pristine waters of coral reefs to those that prefer highly turbid estuarine and fresh waters (Crosetti & Blaber, 2016).…”
