A Novel Modeling Approach to Quantify the Influence of Nitrogen Inputs on the Oxygen Dynamics of the North Sea

Abstract: Oxygen (O 2 ) deficiency, i.e., dissolved O 2 concentrations below 6 mg O 2 L −1 , is a common feature in the southern North Sea. Its evolution is governed mainly by the presence of seasonal stratification and production of organic matter, which is subsequently degraded under O 2 consumption. The latter is strongly influenced by riverine nutrient loads, i.e., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). As riverine P loads have been reduced significantly over the past decades, this study aims for the quantification of the… Show more

“…For this purpose, the element tracing software (ETRAC) by Große et al () was adapted to ROMS. It requires model output for all N cycle sources and sinks (i.e., all physical and biogeochemical processes) to fulfill the following criterion for all state variables X : V()t+t·CX()t+tV()t·CX()t=j=1NPX,j()t. …”

“…This impact will be especially strong in near-shore waters and coastal habitats, near to the terrestrial point sources of nutrients. Outside of the highly productive coastal zone, most primary production on the NWES is thought to be driven by oceanic nutrient input Große et al, 2017;Ruiz-Castillo et al, 2018). While most estuarine and coastal waters are net sources of CO 2 to the atmosphere (Borges et al, 2005), high inorganic nutrient inputs can lead to partial inhibition of these emissions or even to coastal waters being a net sink of atmospheric CO 2 (Kuwae et al, 2016).…”

“…By combining a high-resolution biogeochemical model with this active element tracing method expanded for the quantification of the contributions to O 2 processes (Große et al, 2017(Große et al, , 2019, we provide such an analysis here. We apply the element tracing method to an implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS; Fennel et al, 2006;Haidvogel et al, 45 2008) configured for the ECS (Zhang et al, same issue).…”
