A new species of the Devonian actinopterygianMoythomasiafrom Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, and fresh observations onM. durgaringafrom the Gogo Formation of Western Australia

Abstract: Moythomasia is one of the most speciose and completely known of all Devonian actinopterygian genera and has been incorporated into numerous phylogenetic studies. However, several species remain incompletely documented despite being known from excellent fossil material. Specimens from the Late Devonian of Germany and Australia are described herein. A form from Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, previously described by Jessen as Moythomasia cf. striata, is recognized as a new species: M. lineata, sp. nov. Newly prepare… Show more

“…; Swartz ). Until recently, Mimipiscis toombsi and Moythomasia durgaringa represented the only Devonian actinopterygian taxa in which both the dermal and endochondral anatomy was thoroughly described (Gardiner ; Giles & Friedman 2014; Choo ), with the majority of contemporary forms being primarily known from flattened dermal remains. As a consequence, several earlier studies either omitted many fossil taxa (Gardiner et al .…”

“…The ethmoidal commissure (ethc; Fig. D) is clearly visible as a raised furrow on the medial surface as in Mimipiscis and Gogosardina (Choo ), but unlike Moythomasia (Choo ). The dentition is typical for Devonian actinopterygians (Gardiner ), consisting of conical teeth on the biting margins of the premaxillae, maxilla and dentary which are situated mesial to an outer row of smaller marginal teeth.…”

“…Wide variation in the ridges of cranial bones (Choo et al . ; Choo , ) means that identification of fragmented cranial bones is problematic. Likewise, the high variability of scale morphologies in early Actinopterygii means that it is difficult to say whether the Minto Formation scales represent one or more species (Choo ).…”
