A new species of Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) from central Peru

Abstract: Peruvian species of Magnolia were not included in major treatments of the Peruvian flora until the last decade, following revisions of Dugandiodendron and Talauma for the Neotropics published by Lozano-Contreras in 1994 (Pennington et al. 2004, Ulloa et al. 2004) when M. amazonica (Ducke, 1925: 11) Govaerts (1996: 25) and M. rimachii, (Lozano, 1994: 105) Govaerts (1996: 39), two lowland Amazonian species, were included. Subsequently, new species of Magnolia were described from the eastern humid montane and low… Show more

“…The data incongruence among several major clades also needs to be rigorously tested. The Neotropical Magnoliaceae has recently drawn attention of taxonomists, with many new species described in the last two decades (e.g., Dillon & Sánchez-Vega, 2009;Vázquez-García et al, 2012, 2013b, 2015Arroyo & Pérez, 2013). Future studies need to drastically enhance the taxon sampling in the Neotropics as well as tropical Asia to construct the evolutionary relationships of sect.…”

“…However, Figlar and Nooteboom's (2004) classification system is now widely accepted by the scientific community, with many authors following this broad view of Magnolia, such as Arroyo et al (2013), Ninh et al (2020), Pérez et al (2016) and Zou et al (2020). Figlar (2012) advised against the alternative classification system now operating: In a one genus system only Manglietia, Michelia and 3 minor genera require new names in Magnolia.…”

“…Lozano-Contreras's work included 31 Neotropical species in subsect. Talauma, 20 of which he described (Lozano-Contreras 1983, 1994, but the number of species has more than doubled in the last five years (Serna et al 2009;Dillon & Sánchez-Vega 2009, Vázquez-García et al 2012a, 2012b, 2013a, 2013b, 2013c, 2013d, 2014Marcelo-Peña & Arroyo 2013, Arroyo 2014.
