A new serological technique, time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA), for the immunological diagnosis of urinary schistosomiasis

Abstract: The application of a new serological method, time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA), is described for the diagnosis of urinary schistosomiasis. A chelate of lanthanides (europium) with a long fluorescent life-time is used as label. The intensity of fluorescence is measured after a delay selected to eliminate almost completely the background fluorescence, which decays rapidly. TRFIA was compared with an established method, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Using sera from proven cases of Schistosoma h… Show more

“…Obviously, TRFIA for the detection of galectin-3 is superior to ELISA because of its higher sensitivity. Our Wnding is in agreement with many previous studies on the detection of other biomolecules (Aceti et al 1988;Maple et al 2001). The greater sensitivity of TRFIA beneWts from the use of a highly detectable "tracer" and the sensitivity of labeled reagent techniques may be greatly increased by improving the signal-to-noise ratio.…”

“…The time-resolved¯uorescent assay has also been used to detect CA in other parasitic diseases, e.g. schistosomiasis and angiostrongyliasis (Aceti et al 1988;de Jonge et al 1989;Shih and Chen 1991).…”

“…For the detection of various diagnostic trace protein markers, TRFIA is a promising and appealing approach. Compared with traditional ELISA, TRFIA has been proposed as a more sensitive and specific approach [Aceti et al, ]. In this paper, a reliable and sensitive indirect TRFIA was developed and evaluated for the determination of EBNA1 IgA antibody in human serum.…”
