A New Quality-in-Use Model for Mobile User Interfaces

Abstract: This paper proposes a new quality-in-use model for measuring user interface design quality, and is intended specifically for mobile devices. The proposed model is based on the international standard ISO 9126-4 [ISO/IEC TR 9126-4:2004] and can be adapted to various applications. The qualityin-use factors of effectiveness, productivity, efficiency, safety, and satisfaction are redefined to reflect the ways in which mobile devices are used, and the contexts in which they are used. A new factor, task navigation, i… Show more

“…In order to empirically investigate the effectiveness of the MUI with and without adaptation for the same user belonging to a specific user stereotype in a real-world environment, two sets of hypotheses were formulated, one relating to the objective factors of the new quality-in-use model [12] and the other to its subjective factors. Sample hypotheses for both the subjective and objective factors are listed below:…”

“…A new, mobile-based version of PHIS2 (PHIS2-M) has since been introduced, in order to make the PHIS accessible from a mobile-based platform. A quality-in-use measurement model was developed specifically for the MUI to evaluate the quality of the mobile-based version of PHIS2 (PHIS2-M) [12]. The MUI features were adapted in an intelligent way using an AI rule-based technique to match the requirements of the mobile device to the user model.…”

“…Qualityin-use refers to the software itself, usability concerns only the aspects of using the application in a specific context (Alnanih, Ormandjieva and Radhakrishnan, 2013). According to Osman and Osman (2013), usability is among the three most frequent challenges in the implementation of mobile information systems, being the others its user acceptance and the UX of the application.…”

“…Effectiveness measures the ability of students to complete assessments based on the subject's requirement (Aspiazu, 2013). While efficiency refers to the ability of students to complete their assessments in the specified timeframe (Alnanih, Ormandjieva, & Radhakrishnan, 2013). Besides the above mentioned variables, factors related to students learning such as student engagement and student interactions, are reported to have a huge impact in achieving learning goal (Athabasca University, 2004;Findlay-thompson, Saint, & Mombourquette, 2014).…”
