A new nano‐sized mononuclear Cu (II) complex with N,N‐donor Schiff base ligands: sonochemical synthesis, characterization, molecular modeling and biological activity

Abstract: A new, simple Cu 2+ nano-structure Schiff base complex in methanol medium has been synthesized by the ultrasonic method. Structure of the compound was confirmed by FT-IR, GC-Mass and other spectroscopic techniques. The copper oxide (CuO) was achieved from the copper nano-structure Schiff base complex as the raw material after calcination for 3 hr at 600°C. According to results Cu 2+ gives a complex with mole ratio 1:2 of metal to ligand (ML 2 ) with Schiff base which a distorted square planer is the most proba… Show more

“…The typical characteristic absorption spectra of the synthesized ligand exhibited two characteristic peaks at 263 nm that corresponded to the π-π* transition of phenyl groups. [44,45] This peak appeared in all complexes at the same position. The second peak appeared at 386 nm which related to n-π* transition of (N=N) azo group in the free ligand.…”

“…In the case of Cu II ‐complex/NaY, the electrostatic attraction between the positive charge of Cu 2+ and the negative charge of microbial cell membranes interferes with the permeability of the membrane and is followed by the penetration of the material particles into the cell. In addition, the crystal size is an important factor in increasing penetration of complexes into lipid membranes. As shown from XRD analysis, Cu II ‐complex/NaY is characterized by a nanometric size with respect to pure Cu II ‐complex, which gives further explanation as to the high anti‐microbial activity against the tested bacteria and fungi.…”
