Synthesis, characterization, DNA binding/cleavage, and anticancer and antimicrobial activities: Nano‐sized Co(II) and Cd(II) complexes and their use as a precursor for CoO and CdO nanoparticles

Abstract: In the search of effective bioactive compounds, Co(II) (C1) and Cd(II) (C2) complexes of the type [M(FMAPIMP)(H2O)Cl].nH2O (where M = Co(II); n = 2, Cd(II); n = 3, and FMAPIMP = ligand[2‐((E)‐((2‐(((E)‐furan‐2‐ylmethylene)amino)phenyl)imino)methyl)phenol]) were synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, UV–Vis., cyclic voltammetry, Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR), nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectral studies. The thermal stability of nano‐sized Co(II) and Cd(II) complexes was studied u… Show more

“…The characteristic color of the obtained material (CdO NPs) was brown powder form which is in agreement with previous studies (Alothman & Ammar, 2020; Somasundaram & Rajan, 2018). Our approach was based on coprecipitate method where reactants and products, time and selected organism ( P. oxalicum ) influenced the synthesis process.…”

“…The XRD pattern of the inspected ligand and complexes of cobalt, copper, and thorium displayed an amorphous nature, where the zinc complex exhibits high crystallinity (2theta = 22.05, B (FWHM) = 1.75 and T (nm) = 4.97. The amorphous nature can be attributed to an uncommon configuration for the solid structures' quick precipitation process 58,61 . It is considered also the prevailing one if the precipitation process is speedy and/or rapid cooling of the reaction solution in order to isolate the solid product 62 .…”

“…The amorphous nature can be attributed to an uncommon configuration for the solid structures' quick precipitation process. 58,61 It is considered also the prevailing one if the precipitation process is speedy and/or rapid cooling of the reaction solution in order to isolate the solid product. 62 In addition to that, many ingredients in the structure of the compound are not able to be revealed in a crystal lattice.…”

“…In addition, the Cd complex can be used as a root to produce pure and homogenous CdO nanoparticles. [12][13][14][15][16] For instance, Alothman et al 17 used an inorganic complex of Cd (II) as a suitable root for the fabrication of CdO nanoparticles with good yield and crystallinity. CdO is a well-known n-type semiconductor with a band gap between 2.2 and 2.7 eV and has many applications in various fields, such as solar cell devices, optoelectronics, phototransistors, transparent electrodes, gas sensors, and as a catalyst in the removal of environmental pollutants.…”
