A New Method to Mitigate Annular Pressure Buildup by Using Sacrificial Casing, Case Study: A Deepwater Well in Indonesia

Abstract: For the subsea wells, the only accessible annulus is the annulus between production tubing and production casing or liner. When trapped annular fluid heats up, the fluid expands and will increase the annular pressure. Should the annulus between the surface and production casing gets trapped, the pressure buildup on this annulus would put the integrity of the well in jeopardy. In this study, the tubular design approach is used to mitigate the annular pressure buildup by utilizing a section of low… Show more

“…where DP t denotes the change in annular pressure between packers induced by thermal expansion/contraction of annular fluid, with a unit of MPa; DP v denotes the change in annular pressure between packers induced by the change in annular volume, with a unit of MPa; and DP m denotes the change in annular pressure between packers induced by the change in annular fluid mass, with a unit of MPa. The change in annular pressure between packers caused by fluid contraction with decrease in temperature can be calculated as (Rizkiaputra et al, 2016):…”
