A new measure of resilience: An application to the London Underground

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe many varied views on resilience indicate that it is an important concept which has significance in many disciplines, from ecology to psychology to risk/disaster management. Therefore, it is important to be able to quantifiably measure the resilience of systems, and thus be able to make decisions on how the resilience of the system can be improved. In this paper we will work with the definition, due to Pimm (1991), that resilience is ''how fast a variable that has been displaced from equilibr… Show more

“…The speed of recovery, or so-called "rapidity", has been the focus of evaluations for system resilience in the literature, as described by Ganin et al [19]. This concept, first proposed by Bruneau et al [6], has since then been modified to investigate specifically the "rapidity" dimension of resilience as it refers to the speed of recovery [14,21,4].…”

“…Researchers attempted to define resilience by aligning it with the notions adopted from different disciplines like ecology, sociology, economy or psychology (Bevilacqua, Ciarapica, and Marcucci 2017;Rose 2007;D'Lima and Medda 2015). As a concept in supply chain domain, it refers to the capability of firms to respond timely to disruptive events and ensure continuity of their business processes and operations (Sheffi and Rice Jr 2005;Chopra and Sodhi 2004).…”

“…Due to the multidimensional nature of resilience, a broad model that includes all four properties of resilience is yet to be empirically tested (Cutter et al, 2008). However, it is rather common to measure resilience based on one or more of these properties, subject to the availability of data (D'Lima and Medda, 2015;Venkittaraman and Banerjee, 2014).…”
