A New Energy-Efficient Routing Algorithm Based on Ant Colony System for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Due to the limited availability of energy within network nodes, energy-efficient routing mechanism is one of the most critical issues in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a multi-path routing algorithm with energyaware based on ant colony system. The algorithm introduces three improved rules: Ant Marginalization Rule, State Transition Rule and Global Pheromone Update Rule to solve the problems of local convergence, local optimization and multi-path for transferring data respectively. It can a… Show more

“…Through the trade-off is implicit in the multipath routing tactics, the effect of the trade-off mechanism could not be defined precisely yet. Similar to ACMRA, the trade-off in Xia's protocol [40] and multipath routing based on ant colony system (MACS) [41] are also based on the nature of multipath structure, in which the forward ant selects a link still based on the residual energy and energy consumption.Multipath is a basic approach to solve the trade-off between energy efficiency and other performances, especially QoS. With the help of multipath routing, the available resources at each node can be used more efficiently.…”

“…The main functions of sensor nodes are to sense any changes in WSN and communicate between the available sensor nodes to forward packets from source node to destination node (Xia et al, 2009;Sutar and Bodhe, 2010). However, the available sensor nodes in WSN have limited energy and computational power.…”
