Show more

“…In particular there has been an increase in the number of cases among poor, heterosexual, female, suburban, and rural populations [5][6][7] . With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy, there has been a large increase in the survival of HIV-positive patients, although the efficacy of this therapy depends on the frequency of other coinfections in patients 8 . With the emergence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which has spread from big cities to small towns, in conjunction with the urbanization of VL, there have been several cases of VL/HIV co-infection reported globally 9,10 .…”

“…10 The introduction of HAART allowed for a reduction in mortality of 33%, which has remained stable. 20 Given this new global reality, it is relevant to understand the correlations that exist between the QoL of these patients and adherence to HAART. Even though the relationship between these two factors has not yet been extensively studied, it is known that adherence to HAART improves clinical results, controls the progression of disease and reduces mortality rates, which supposedly should result in improved patient QoL.…”
