Towards QoS-Aware Load Balancing for High Density Software Defined Wi-Fi Networks

High density Wi-Fi networks require load balancing in order to ensure quality of service (QoS). In the traditional Wi-Fi networks, the wireless stations learn the access points (APs) load and make the association decisions themselves leading to uneven load distribution among the APs. The new paradigm, software defined networking (SDN), has a centralized architecture, which allows to manage, measure and control high density Wi-Fi networks easily. In this paper we propose a QoS-aware load balancing strategy (QALB) for software defined Wi-Fi networks (SD-Wi-Fi), as a solution to address the problem of Wi-Fi congestion among the OpenFlow enabled APs (OAPs). The SDN controller selects a load level up to which the association decisions are made by the OAPs without consulting the controller. The wireless stations from an overloaded OAP are handed to an underloaded OAP by considering multi-metrics such as the packet loss rate, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and throughput. An emulation platform and a large-scalelow-cost testbed with the same settings are constructed to evaluate the performance of our load balancing strategy. The results show that in comparison to four non-static schemes such as, channel measurement based access selection scheme (CMAS), (DL-SINR) downlink-signal to interference plus noise ratio AP selection scheme (DASA), mean probe delay scheme (MPD) and RSSI scheme, the proposed QALB, optimizes the throughput up to 16%, reduces the average frame delay up to 19%, minimizes the number of re-transmissions by 49%, reduces the number of handoffs by 15%, improves the degree of load balancing by 22% and minimizes the re-association times by 38%, in high density SD-Wi-Fi. Today it has become important to reconfigure the networks in to new form to be more manageable, scalable, dynamic and programmable. The networks recently are so inflexible and failing to deal with the required changes for the Information Technology. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a modern paradigm that focused to change the main idea of current network infrastructure (traditional network) by breaking the chain between the data forwarding and the control planes to introduce flexible programmability network. This paper makes comparison between the performance of traditional fat-tree network and SDN fat-tree network, which found that average Round Tripe Time (RTT) in SDN fat-tree topology will decrease by 8.96% than traditional fat-tree topology. Then shows the basic operation of OpenFlow protocol that can be applied on fat-tree topology by using SDN technology and how that can be effect on the performance of network and make it more flexible to enable the SDN module applications, like load balancer and firewall for optimizing the SDN network. In this paper the physical switches are replaced by software switches in a virtual network environment and display the SDN structure in GUI, also Floodlight controller is chosen to use as the network operating system for SDN network.

Resumen: Un aspecto relevante en investigación a nivel de redes de datos es la optimización de recursos. Las redes deben gestionar grandes volúmenes de tráfico sin introducir tiempos de espera innecesarios y garantizar la disponibilidad de servicios. Este artículo propone un algoritmo de balanceo de carga basado en un sistema de criterios combinados que utiliza tecnologías de redes definidas por software para obtener en tiempo de ejecución, parámetros desde distintos puntos de la red y seleccionar el servidor con las mejores condiciones para responder. La aplicación propuesta está escrita en lenguaje Python utilizando el controlador Ryu; la implementación de este programa en un switch, lo convierte en un balanceador de carga. Se utilizó la herramienta de simulación Mininet para la evaluación resultados; el experimento demuestra que el balanceador de carga basado en criterios combinados, reduce, hasta en un 50%, el tiempo de respuesta del servidor en comparación con el método tradicional Round Robin.Palabras-clave: SDN; balanceo de carga; redes; servidores; OpenFlow. Dynamic Load Balancing Application for Servers, Based on Software Defined Networking.Abstract: A relevant topic in current data network research is network resource optimization. Networks must cope with large volumes of traffic and ensure the availability of services without introducing unnecessary timeouts. This article presents a load balance algorithm based on software defined networks; it uses combined criteria to obtain at runtime, parameters from different nodes in the network to select the server with the best capability to deliver services. The proposed load balancer is written in Python language using the Ryu controller. The implementation of the python code on a switch allows it to act as a network load balancer. Mininet simulation tool was used in the experiment. Results demonstrate that the SDN load balancer obtains a response time up to 50% lower than Round Robin algorithm.
