A hierarchical approach for online temporal lobe seizure detection in long-term intracranial EEG recordings

Abstract: An on-line seizure detection method that can be applied to monitor continuous iEEG signals of patients who suffered from TLE was developed. An IC selection strategy to automatically determine the most seizure-related IC for seizure detection was also proposed. The system has advantages of (1) high detection accuracy, (2) low false alarm, (3) short detection latency, and (4) energy-efficient design for hardware implementation.

“…After dynamic system theory was used to develop the framework of viewing epilepsy as a “dynamical disease,” the seizure prediction/detection/anticipation and control has been investigated with unparalleled enthusiasm. Over the Past decade, many seizure prediction/detection algorithms have been proposed to anticipate seizures . However, these algorithms were tested offline using high performance computers and the detection sensitivities ranged from 62% to 98%.…”

“…It has considerable economic implications in terms of health-care needs, and sometimes, may result in death of matured persons. Around 1% of the world's population is affected by epilepsy, and nearly 25% of them cannot be treated effectively by available therapies due to resistance to drugs [1]. However, the resection of the epileptogenic zone is rather difficult due to the overlay with other eloquent areas responsible for language, primary motor and vision.…”
