A Harp Seal × Hooded Seal Hybrid

Abstract: In this study we report the first documentation of mating between harp (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded seals (Cystophora cristata). The production of this hybrid was quite unusual, being the result of a cross between parents of different genera which are morphologically dissimilar and have quite different mating behavior and dramatically different body sizes. The molecular techniques (mtDNA and macrosatellite nuclear DNA banding patterns) used in this study will undoubtedly be applied widely to many different … Show more

“…The mating systems of ice-breeding seals with spatially scattered distribution of females are less well known (Le Boeuf 1991). Promiscuity such as in harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus (Erxleben, 1777); Kovacs 1995in Kovacs et al 1997 and slight polygyny or serial monogamy (where females (or males) usually mate with a single partner in successive breeding attempts during a single breeding season but mate with several different partners during their lifetime; Clutton-Brock 1989) such as in hooded seals (Cystophora cristata (Erxleben, 1777); Boness et al 1988;McRae and Kovacs 1994) has been reported.…”

“…A natural comparison is with the related hooded seal, Cystophora cristata (Mouchaty et al 1995;Carr and Perry 1997;Kovacs et al 1997). These species are similar in distribution, migration, annual cycle, association with ice for breeding and moult, and population biology (Reeves and Ling 1981;Kovacs and Lavigne 1986;Boyd 1991;Atkinson 1997).…”

“…Hybrids among wild pinnipeds have been reported for Antarctic and subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) (Goldsworthy et al 1999), and harp and hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) (Kovacs et al 1997). Among the fur seals, hybridization rates were so high that they represented a risk to successful reestablishment of populations, but the frequency of crossing appears to be dropping as the numbers of animals recover, with site fidelity and somewhat different habitat preferences favoring breeding true, inducing declines in hybridization rates (Goldsworthy et al 2009;Lancaster et al 2010).…”
