A guideline for simulation studies of wastewater treatment plants

Abstract: A guideline for simulation studies of wastewater treatment plants is proposed. The aim of the HSG-guideline is to define a reference quality level that helps to make the results of simulation studies comprehensible and comparable and therefore increases the quality and reliability of mathematical modelling in wastewater treatment. The paper gives a summary of the HSG-guideline, written by a group of university members from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

“…Performance evaluation of existing treatment plants is required (1) to assess the existing effluent quality and/or to meet higher treatment requirements and, (2) to know about the treatment plants whether it is possible to handle higher hydraulic and organic loadings. Performance appraisal practice of existing treatment plants is effective in generation of additional data which also can be used in the improvement in the design procedures to be followed for design of these plants.…”

“…Detailed description is presented in Mikosz (1999). The model usually needs to be checked and recalibrated each time it is used for the optimization of the existing plant, but for many simulation studies, a lower quality of calibration and validation is sufficient (Langergraber et al 2004). As the model proved to be effective in the past, this time it was only recalibrated statically.…”
