A Green Water-Soluble Cyclophosphazene as a Flame Retardant Finish for Textiles

Abstract: Poly- and cyclophosphazenes are excellent flame retardants but currently, are not used as textile finishing agents because water-soluble and permanent washing systems are missing. Here, we demonstrate for the first time, the successful usage of a water-soluble cyclotriphosphazene derivative for textile finishing for cotton, different cotton/polyester, and cotton/polyamide blend fabrics. A durable finish was achieved using a photoinduced grafting reaction. The flame retardant properties of the various fabrics w… Show more

“…[1,2], because of its excellent properties, such as low cost, being resistant to chemicals, dimensional stability, and good physical features [3][4][5][6][7][8]. However, polyester textile is flammable and it will melt dripping during combustion, which caused potential fire risks to people's lives and property [9,10]. Therefore, it is necessary to impose flame retardancy to textile in work clothes and tents applications [11,12].…”

“…The treatment of ammonia by thermal heat treatments includes phosphorus-oriented compounds, pre-condensates and fibre responsive compounds which require multiple steps in the process. [46,47] Some of the more important requirement for ideal durable retardant is the following   Capability to impart resistance to fire, that is to say, resistance to flame and glow   Application for all weight textiles and preferably water solutions   Easy to apply on existing finishing equipment, preferably without danger. The surface of fibres may be fitted with a durable flame retardant and/or penetrate the fibres.…”

“…And we also explored the acid–base synergistic flame‐retardant WPP, and the LOI value reached 35.7% with guanidine phosphate/borax FR system 18 . Nevertheless, a majority of reported phosphorous containing FRs are not long‐lasting due to water solubility and hygroscopicity, thus incurring the deterioration of flame‐retardant property in humid environment 19‐22 . Reactive‐type FRs adopted in cellulosic materials are universally graft‐reacted with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose 23,24 .…”
