A General Systems Theory Approach in Public Hearing Health: Lessons Learned From a Systematic Review of General Systems Theory in Healthcare

Abstract: General Systems Theory (GST), as it was introduced by Karl Ludwig von Bertalannfy, had a significant, yet mostly unacknowledged influence on systems theory. The purpose of the current review is to highlight and assess the application of the aforementioned theory in the healthcare field and suggest a new approach to the public hearing healthcare sector. A systematic literature review has been conducted in the electronic databases of ScienceDirect, Pubmed and IEEEXplore covering the years of 2009-2019, following… Show more

“…The field of systems thinking approaches is vast, as there have been schools of thought of more applied and pragmatic approaches, and of more general and idealistic. For example, operations research approach, analysing emergency department gatekeeping systems and aiming to minimise the wrongful discharges of patient (Freeman, Robinson and Scholtes, 2021), would deal with solving a clear, applied problem; whereas general systems theory ideas (Boulding, 1956;Bertalanffy, 1969), applied in, e.g., understanding the multi-level dynamics of regional mental healthcare system (Katrakazas et al, 2020), represents a much more abstract and general level of approach.…”

“…Specific online repositories were also investigated, such as ACM Digital Library, Cochrane or the Science Social Citations Citation Index (SSCI) Online. Still, they returned zero (ACM) and one result (Cochrane, SSCI) respectively (Katrakazas et al, 2020).…”

“…The development of the public healthcare system is influenced by the level of economic development, community culture, policies, and laws [23,24]. In turn, the level of development of the public healthcare system has an impact on economic growth, urbanization, political elections, and other social activities [25]. As an example, the mismatch between public health care and socio-economic development is widespread in developing and even developed countries [26][27][28].…”
