A Framework for Implementing OER-Based Lesson Design Activities for Pre-Service Teachers

Abstract: The demand for qualified teachers with sufficient pedagogical knowledge and skills is high. However, existing teacher education programs do not provide adequate experiences through which to develop pre-service teachers’ professional foundations. This study recognized Open Educational Resources (OER) as a means by which to address the issue of enhancing teacher education. The purpose of this study was to propose a framework to be used to integrate OER into lesson design activities for pre-service teachers. In t… Show more

“…While not the focus of Hilton’s paper, directing interested readers to additional resources to help them find OER materials, and point to best practices for using them would be helpful. While not all available at the time of Hilton’s 2016 paper, practitioners may find the following suggested resource helpful: Kim’s ( 2018 ) framework for implementing OER-based lesson design, West’s ( 2019 ) process for creating an introductory OER book, or repositories of OER materials such as https://www.edtechbooks.org , https://www.oercommons.org , and https://openstax.org/ .…”

“…Vol 50 No 6 2019 Despite the benefits of OER-based learning, its open nature often challenges learners (Ponti, 2014); the absence of instructor and formal curriculum requires them to use self-directed learning strategies such as time management (Miyazoe & Anderson, 2013). Furthermore, OERs are often not pedagogically organized, and learners need help from others to properly use them (Gourley & Lane, 2009;Kim, 2018). However, little research has been conducted to investigate the self-directed learning patterns of non-formal learners using OERs.…”

“…Despite the exponential growth of free resources, learners are “adrift in an ocean of information” (Shum & Ferguson, , p. 9). Non‐formal learning with OERs is largely affected by how learners recontextualize OERs in their own learning contexts (Kim, ). Many non‐formal learners report challenges in utilizing resources suited to their educational needs (Hassall & Lewis, ).…”
