A Flexible FS-FBMC Receiver for Dynamic Access in the TVWS

Abstract: Filterbank multicarrier modulation (FBMC) has been identified as a strong contender for dynamic spectrum access in the TV White Space, as FBMC transceivers are able to control out-of-band interference level without compromising flexible usage. This paper compares FBMC receiver architectures, providing performance and complexity analysis, based on closed form expressions and on an actual implementation. Polyphase network (PPN-) and frequency spreading (FS-) FBMC receiver structures are discussed. The FS-FBMC st… Show more

“…NC-OFDM (one of the favorite NC schemes presented in the literature- [7] [8]) allows subcarriers to be disabled, but due to the fact it uses rectangular pulse shaping, it has very high OOB power levels [9]. FBMC can also transmit NC channels, and depending on the prototype filter chosen, can achieve excellent ACLR levels [10]. (The prototype filter's frequency response is used as the basis of all filters in the bank).…”

“…Unlike NC-OFDM, this signal can be moulded to fit around existing PUs, and broadcast with minimal interference to them. While PPN-FBMC is the de facto architecture because of its efficient implementation, the synchronisation benefits of the FS-FBMC receiver mean that the frequency spreading technique is the architecture of choice when designing radios for use in a DSA environment [10]. Because the designs are equivalent, in theory it is possible to have a mixed architecture radio; i.e.…”

“…If we classify the components in Figure 7 into two sections to discuss the implementation for the proposed channel estimator, the white boxes are common blocks necessary for the implementation of FS-FBMC system while the shaded boxes are only the necessary block for proposed scheme. In the case of common blocks necessary for FS-FBMC system, the analyses of implementation issue are discussed in [15,16]. Thus in the complexity sense, the increased hardware includes memory blocks for buffering, multiplexer for input data for channel store/modification block, and multiplier for CSI estimation modifying process for each subchannel.…”

“…Therefore, this strategy is not well adapted to the hardware implementation as it requires more control logic. In [11], the authors describe a high performance receiver architecture denoted FS-FBMC (Frequency Spreading FBMC). One advantage of this architecture comes from the fact that time synchronization may be performed in the frequency domain independently of the position of the FFT [11].…”
