A first attempt to use a Fusarium subglutinans culture filtrate for the selection of pineapple cultivars resistant to fusariose disease

Abstract: Pineapple, Ananas comosus L. Merr., cultivars differing in resistance to fusariose were examined for the phytotoxic effect of culture nitrate (CF), and fusaric acid (FA) isolated from Fusarium subglutinans (Wollew & Reinking) Nelson, Toussoun & Marasas. The possibility of using these substances on F1 hybrids as selection agents for resistance was also evaluated. The phytotoxic effect of these substances was assessed in pineapple plantlets from tissue culture by placing them on wounded leaf segments. The resist… Show more

“…In Cuba, a disease called "fusariose" caused by F. subglutinans has been reported (Borras et al 2001;Hildalgo et al 1999), but it is not clear whether it is the same disease as fusariosis in South America. A similar disease known as fruitlet core rot occurs in Hawaii (Rohrbach & Pfeiffer 1976), and the associated 'F.…”

“…It produces phytotoxins in culture that were phytotoxic on 386 calluses (Jin et al, 1996;Kaur et al, 1987) and the correlation between pineapple variety and the toxicity of culture filtrates suggests that filtrates could be used to screen in vitro for disease resistance (Borras et al, 2001). Therefore, the cryopreservation of pineapple calluses can provide a means of effective source when in vitro screening of germplasm for fusariose disease would be attempted.…”
