A finite element method for light activated shape‐memory polymers

Abstract: Summary Shape‐memory polymers (SMPs) belong to a class of smart materials that have shown promise for a wide range of applications. They are characterized by their ability to maintain a temporary deformed shape and return to an original parent permanent shape. In this paper, we consider the coupled photomechanical behavior of light activated shape‐memory polymers (LASMPs), focusing on the numerical aspects for finite element simulations at the engineering scale. The photomechanical continuum framework is summa… Show more

“…The studies of multifield coupling phenomena (MCP) are important for functional and structural materials because they are often operated under several external stimuli simultaneously in real applications. In the area of multifield coupling, a group of researchers have dedicated to the computational and modeling works in order to explain the fundamental coupling mechanisms, and the other stream of research has been focused on the experimental studies of MCP from macroscale to nanoscale . MCP can be found in many different applications.…”

“…Hamel's study [98] tackled this framework solely utilizing ABAQUS through the development of a user subroutine, referred to as the user element (UEL). Within this approach, the weak forms of the radiative transfer equation and the balance of linear momentum were discretized and approximated using linear two-and three-dimensional isoparametric elements.…”

“…light-responsive or pH-sensitive SMPs, etc.). For instance, for details on light-sensitive SMPs, one may refer to Hamel et al (2017), Long et al (2009), Sodhi and Rao (2010), Yuan et al (2017), and Zhi et al (2017). Xiao et al (2016b) developed a constitutive model for an SMP responsive to dissolution.…”
