Introduction:The literature has indicated that young offenders may show varied problems of mental health; however, in Brazil a limited number of studies are focused on that question. Objective: Identify the health, self-esteem and social support levels of male young offenders complying with not confined socio-educational measures, the parenting styles adopted towards them and identify the relationship between these variables. Methods: It is an exploratory and correlational study in which 33 male young offenders aged between 14 and 18 years who attend the socio-educational programme of a mid-size city in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, took part on the study, they answered specific instruments to appraise different variables of focus. Results:The results indicate that 67% of the adolescents presented mental health disorders; 84% perceive that the social support received is below "low" or "medium", and 33% judge the parental style of their caregiver as a risk. The greater the negligence and poor support of the family and caregivers, the lower the self-esteem of young offenders. Conclusions: Most of the adolescents had mental health disorders and evaluated the social support received as low or medium. All participants evaluated negatively the parental style adopted by their parents. The parental style used was considered below average and risky. Furthermore, was observed that the lower the self-esteem of the adolescents and the lower the family support perceived by them, the higher was the degree of parental negligence evaluated. It is understood that these results reinforce the need for intersectoral coordination in actions aimed at this population.

A relação do adolescente autor de ato infracional com o espaço escolar é o tema central deste artigo. Procurou-se refletir sobre o eixo da escolarização na medida socioeducativa de semiliberdade, levando em conta as peculiaridades de tal medida no que concerne aos impasses vividos com a escola. Para isso, realizou-se uma análise tanto da evasão escolar dos adolescentes, destacandose a função da escola em suas vidas e as dificuldades de permanecer no espaço escolar, quanto dos problemas enfrentados por professores na inserção desses alunos. Entender os desafios da escolarização na medida de semiliberdade contribui para uma compreensão ampliada dos impasses na educação hoje, visto que isso demanda uma pesquisa que contemple os jovens e sua relação conflituosa com a escola, a dificuldade dos educadores com a transmissão e a resistência das instituições. Finalmente, sugerem-se saídas para o trabalho da semiliberdade com base no entendimento da escola como lugar de vida.

Dissertation -Departamento de Educação, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro.This research investigates possible obstacles in the education of adolescents undergoing socioeducational measures in freedom in the city of Rio de Janeiro.Therefore, it was employed the empirical material collected in field research through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with professionals of Justice and Social Welfare, in addition to directors of schools that receive adolescents in conflict with the law. The study also included documentary analysis of information on 109 youths who have committed illegal acts and live in the downtown area. We tried to understand what happens at the interface between the school system, the judiciary and the social welfare system, the perceptions of the agents involved and the challenges of the relationship among them. The results show that a large part of the studied adolescents do not attend school. Those who study, in general, are allocated on flow correction projects or groups of Youth and Adult Education. As a rule, the measures in freedom are limited to bureaucratic referrals to school, employment agencies and the health posts. The school, which could serve as a link of integration among the agencies involved, seems smothered with structural problems such as the work overload of managers. According to the directors, adolescents in conflict with the law attend school, for a short time simply to comply with the determination of the judge. As a conclusion we discuss the need for building a network that will work in coordination to assure the rights of these young people, also providing support to school work and thus potentializing greater chances of interrupting the trajectory of law infraction practice and school failure.
