A distinctive strain of the red clover mottle virus in the Netherlands

Abstract: A virus isolate obtained from red clover in the Netherlands in 1957 has been identified as red clover mottle virus by means of host reaction studies, electron microscopy and serology. This isolate is considered to be a separate strain, however, on the basis of clear differences in severity of symptoms in broad bean, pea and red clover plants and especially of qualitative serological differences between this isolate and the English type strain. The virus produces granular inclusion bodies in artificially infect… Show more

“…The following virus isolates were used for inoculations: a pea mosaic strain (BYMV-Ps) and a common strain of BYMV (BYMV-Vf) from pea (Pisum sativum L.) and broad bean (Viciu fuba L.)? respectively, collected in the field in Southern Finland (Valkonen, 1993); a strain of RCMV causing necrosis in pea (Bos & Maat, 1965), BBSV (isolate TV73-85; Makkouk er ul.. 1987): BCMV and AMV isolated from bean and potato. respectively, in Peru; and CMV with an unknown origin from Peru.…”

“…A nrisera Rabbit polyclonal antibodies to an isolate of BYMV from USA (Hammond & Hammond, 1989) were obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), Rockville (PVAS-368 4-85), to an isolate of BYMV from The Netherlands (B25: Bos, 1970) (Bos & Maat, 1965) and BBSV (Makkouk et al, 1987) were obtained from Dr L Bos, to AMV from the ATCC (PVAS-92: Hiruki & Miczynski, 1987), and to BCMV and CMV from the ClP Virology Laboratory, Lima, Peru. The antibodies to BYMV, BCMV and AMV were conjugated with alkaline phosphatase (AP) essentially as described by Clark & Adams (1977).…”
