A direct borohydride–peroxide fuel cell using a Pd/Ir alloy coated microfibrous carbon cathode

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA direct borohydride fuel cell with a Pd/Ir catalysed microfibrous carbon cathode and a gold-catalysed microporous carbon cloth anode is reported. The fuel and oxidant were NaBH 4 and H 2 O 2 , at concentrations within the range of 0.1-2.0 mol dm À3 and 0.05-0.45 mol dm À3 , respectively. Different combinations of these reactants were examined at 10, 25 and 42°C. At constant current density between 0 and 113 mA cm À2 , the Pd/Ir coated microfibrous carbon electrode proved more active for the red… Show more

“…H 2 O 2 has been investigated as an alternative oxidant in replacing of oxygen. Several types of fuel cells using H 2 O 2 as the oxidant have been reported, including direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cells [1][2][3][4][5][6][7], metal-hydrogen peroxide semi-fuel cells [8][9][10][11][12][13], direct methanol-hydrogen peroxide fuel cells [14][15][16], hydrazine-hydrogen peroxide fuel cells [17], and biofuel-hydrogen peroxide fuel cells [18]. Recently, a fuel cell using H 2 O 2 as both oxidant and fuel (direct peroxide-peroxide fuel cell) has been proposed.…”

“…The DBHFC was tested at 298 K. The open circuit voltage (OCV) of the cell is about 1.7 V, which is lower than the standard cell potential for the DBFC. The low value is probably caused by mixed potential at the anode and cathode from simultaneous oxidation of ions i n t e r n a t i o n a l j o u r n a l o f h y d r o g e n e n e r g y 3 7 ( 2 0 1 2 ) 1 7 9 8 4 e1 7 9 9 1 and hydrogen at the anode and reduction of H 2 O 2 and O 2 at the cathode [46]. “…Obviously, all the OCVs were lower than the theoretical value of DBHFC (3.01 V). The low value was probably caused by mixed potential from at the anode and the cathode [48]. As shown in Fig.…”
