Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) include a large number of sensor nodes that are connected to each other with the limitations in energy sources, battery life, memory, mobility and computational capacity. Since the traditional layered architecture was appropriate only for the wired network. It works within a strict boundary that leads to more energy usage as well as more communication traffic. It also impacts on the overall network lifespan and performance of the system. Energy efficiency and network lifespan are the primary concern of WSN due to the fact that each node in the network operates with extremely limited energy. Recent studies have shown that the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model cannot meet the demands of the wireless sensor network. To overcome such limitations, the cross-layer design has been introduced. It allows direct interactions between protocol at non-adjacent layers. In this paper, we present different types of cross-layer design techniques in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and discusses several cross-layer proposals given by researchers. At the end, the paper highlights some challenges faced in implementing CLD in Wireless Sensor Networks.

Considered as part of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, Internet-connected wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly using sensor nodes with mobility option. The mobility of sensor nodes is not necessarily limited within a single WSN but could also be across several WSNs. From this, efficiency, flexibility, and interoperability with the existing infrastructure are mandatory features. Unfortunately, current mobility management solutions are not optimized sufficiently for WSNs. In this paper, we propose a new solution (named as CL-MIPv6) that uses detected link-layer information with an adapted scheme of the standard MIPv6 to provide constrained mobile nodes with fast, reliable, and low-cost internetwork handoffs. The idea behind our proposal consists of enabling reliable internetwork mobility anticipation, fast foreign-network detection, and then processing low-overhead handoff-related signaling at mobile nodes. The evaluation of the proposed solution has demonstrated remarkable improvements in terms of reliability and energy-latency costs of internetwork handoffs. The advantage of the contribution over its counterparts becomes more significant as the mobility speed and the overall network traffic load increase.

In mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs), each sensor has the ability not only to sense and transmit data but also to move to some specific location. Because the movement of sensors consumes much more power than that in sensing and communication, the problem of scheduling mobile sensors to cover all targets and maintain network connectivity such that the total movement distance of mobile sensors is minimized has received a great deal of attention. However, in reality, due to a limited budget or numerous targets, mobile sensors may be not enough to cover all targets or form a connected network. Therefore, targets must be weighted by their importance. The more important a target, the higher the weight of the target. A more general problem for target coverage and network connectivity, termed the Maximum Weighted Target Coverage and Sensor Connectivity with Limited Mobile Sensors (MWTCSCLMS) problem, is studied. In this paper, an approximation algorithm, termed the weighted-maximum-coveragebased algorithm (WMCBA), is proposed for the subproblem of the MWTCSCLMS problem. Based on the WMCBA, the Steinertree-based algorithm (STBA) is proposed for the MWTCSCLMS problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the STBA provides better performance than the other methods.
