A Critical Review of the Properties of Fusidic Acid and Analytical Methods for Its Determination

Abstract: Fusidic acid, an antibiotic produced from the Fusidium coccineum fungus, belongs to the class of steroids, but has no corticosteroid effects. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains. The aim of this study was to search for the properties of fusidic acid published so far in the literature, as well as the methods developed for its determination in biological samples and pharmaceutical formulations. From the findings, we can conclude that fusid… Show more

“…Chromatographic techniques, especially those involving HPLC are widely used in pharmaceutical analysis (Corrêa and Salgado, 2011;Bonfilio et al, 2012;Chierentin and Salgado, 2016;Curbete and Salgado, 2016;Fernandes and Salgado, 2016;Pedroso and Salgado, 2016). A number of detectors coupled with HPLC systems are currently used, such as ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectrophotometry, fluorescence methods, MS, and electrochemical methods (Bonfilio et al, 2010).…”

“…Fungi also possess great potential in producing a broad spectrum of metabolites, which can be applied for medication or therapeutic purposes. For example, griseofulvin isolated from Penicillium griseofulvum served as antimycotic drug [85], while fusidic acid from Fusidium coccineum [86] and cephalosporins from Acremonium chrysogenum act as antibacterial agents, and lovastatin isolated from Aspergillus terreus and mevastatin from Penicillium citrinum [87] can be used as lipid lowering agents. Besides this, similar like bacteria, fungi can express metabolites which can influence host homeostasis and exert biological effects on host, as part of fungi-host interactions [17].…”
