A Cost Optimized Fully Sustainable Power System for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, a cost optimal 100% renewable energy based system is obtained for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim region for the year 2030 on an hourly resolution for the whole year. For the optimization, the region was divided into 15 sub-regions and three different scenarios were set up based on the level of high voltage direct current grid connections. The results obtained for a total system levelized cost of electricity showed a decrease from 66.7 €/MWh in a decentralized scenario to 63.5 €/MWh … Show more

“…Similar HVDC grid interconnection impact on electricity cost has also been observed in other studies carried out with the same criteria [14,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. The total LCOE in North America declined from 63 €/MWh for the region-wide scenario to 53 €/MWh for the area-wide scenario and to 42 €/MWh for the integrated scenario.…”

“…The potential of regional interconnection between Australia and other South East Asian countries in the region have been explored in References [23][24][25]. Reference [23] investigated the role of a submarine high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link connecting Indonesia's Java-Bali power grid to the NEM grid through the Northern Territory.…”

“…There is also potential for economic efficiency through integration. A model for 100% renewable energy supply in Southeast Asia [57] found that a centralized interconnected scenario resulted in a lower overall levelized cost of energy than a decentralized scenario comprising independent national grids. This was partly due to the stabilization of the intermittency of renewable resources by integration over a large scale, and partly due to the integration of additional demand of industrial gas and desalinated water to provide flexible loads.…”
