This paper examines the variable functions of the clausal construction digo yo (DY) ‘I say’ in contemporary Peninsular Spanish. A corpus-based analysis shows pendulation between a communicative DY, which introduces past quotes, and a metacommunicative DY, which functions as a comment clause. In initial position, DY resembles a matrix clause, however, its subject-verb inversion produces a backgrounding effect which renders the conjunction que (‘that’) unnecessary and favours a parenthetical analysis of DY. In medial and final positions DY is an evidential/epistemic comment clause which overlaps with other epistemic comment clauses (e.g. creo yo ‘I believe’, pienso yo ‘I think’). In order to provide a unified account of the different uses of DY, a constructional approach is taken. In line with Van Bogaert (2010) and Kaltenböck (2010, 2013), the formal and functional features of DY are explained through a constructional network. A hierarchical network captures its links to the communicative construction, while its analogical connections to other epistemic constructions are captured in a horizontal network (Traugott, 2018).

This study investigates the use of progressives with mental verbs in courtroom talk and shows a range of subjective meanings which are not delivered by the simple form. Looking at the data from a British libel trial, it explores patterned co-occurrences with first-person subjects vs. second- and third-person subjects, revealing both emphatic, polite and interpretative uses of the analyzed items. In addition, context-sensitivity and speaker status (judge vs. other participants) are shown to be significant factors affecting both the choice of verbs and their interactional configurations. The findings reveal not only well-established uses of “progressive statives” (wonder and think) but also less conventional ones which convey intensity and expressivity (e.g., understand, remember and want). It is also revealed that the use of progressives with mental verbs differs from the deployment of progressives with communication verbs. In both groups of verbs, however, the interpretative meaning is common. In sum, the study situates progressives with mental verbs among stancetaking resources which speakers employ to share their thoughts, wishes and desires, and to position themselves against other interactants and their propositions.

This study examines the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Pakistani political speeches at the United Nations General Assembly. The study analysed six political speech transcripts for discourse markers, categorised them by their functions, and used Fung and Carter's framework (2007) for classification and examined with the perspective of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The research aims to analyse the discoursal aspects of the political genre and highlight the significance of DMs as a linguistic strategy in political communication. The study's findings reveal that DMs are critical in projecting confidence and authority while avoiding markers that isolate or estrange specific audience segments. Both democratic and dictatorial leaders use interpersonal markers to establish rapport with their audience. Continuation markers play a crucial role in ensuring the coherence and continuity of ideas in their political speeches. This study underscores the strategic use of DMs in political communication and its implications for shaping the persuasive message conveyed by politicians to their audience. It highlights the crucial role of DMs in political discourse and underscores the importance of studying them to gain a deeper understanding of the political genre. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the use of DMs in political speeches and their role in shaping the persuasive message of politicians to their audience.
