A corpus-based analysis of textbooks used in the orientation course for immigrants in Germany: Ideological and pedagogic implications

Abstract: Contextualized within immigrants' acquisition of specialized knowledge about the host country at the institutional level, this article examines a 64295-word corpus of textbooks written for participants of the orientation course in German politics, history and culture. Corpus-based techniques ("keyness," collocation and qualitative examination of concordance lines) are deployed to explore the corpus. “…Concerning ELT (English Language Teaching), there have been many studies comparing the language used in textbooks/course books and language in corpora (Arellano, 2018;Biber & Reppen, 2002;Burton, 2012;Cheng & Warren, 2007;Choi & Chon, 2012;Dongkwang & Chon, 2011;Leung, 2016;Ojanen, 2008;Phoocharoensil, 2017, among others). Interestingly, those studies predominantly show the discrepancies between language in textbooks and language in corpora.…”

“…The reliance of research on text analysis with little attention to the context of the use of the textbook, however, has limitations since researchers argue that textbooks should be examined deeply in terms of how teachers use them in classrooms (Nicol & Crespo, 2006). Furthermore, Leung (2016) noted that it is essential for textbook studies to be situated in cultural settings to understand differences between countries based on instructional practices in different contexts. Fan et al (2013) proposed the following framework to classify the literature on textbook research in mathematics consisting of the role of textbooks, textbook analysis, and comparison textbook use, and other aspects.…”

“…Corpus linguists have argued that a well-designed corpus study can characterize the 'aboutness' of texts (Scott & Tribble, 2006b, 2006aWarren, 2010). Keyword analysis in textbooks, for example, can help us characterize the knowledge domain and bring our attention to the ideologies embedded within ( Fraysse-Kim, 2010;Leung, 2016). Both Frayesse-Kim (2010) and Leung (2016) use textbooks as a site of inquiry, and through keyword analysis, they are able to present data and arguments about the texts' ideologies.…”

Both Frayesse-Kim (2010) and Leung (2016) use textbooks as a site of inquiry, and through keyword analysis, they are able to present data and arguments about the texts' ideologies. Using keyword analysis, researchers can go further to characterize the content and provide insights about an entire corpus of disciplinary texts (Biber & Jones, 2009).…”
