A controlled study of the functional and morphological characteristics of malocclusion in prematurely born subjects with low birth weight

Abstract: Prevalence of malocclusion among prematurely born subjects is not significantly different compared with controls, and premature birth is not a risk indicator for any functional or morphological characteristics of malocclusion.

“…In the incisal edges and occlusal surfaces of the teeth there is no alveolar bone, and this absence of bone support between the gum pad and the tooth is susceptible to trauma in the oral cavity, for example, at birth or in the neonatal period, which can have serious consequences (Primozic et al, 2014). What was observed in this report is that the prolonged fixed positioning of the OT provided an important alteration in the gum pad.…”

“…Most of the times PN and MLW require a prolonged period of hospitalization (Cassiano et al, 2020), being subjected to devices, such as orotracheal cannula, OT, and procedures, such as laryngoscopy, venous access, among others for the effectiveness of treatment such as ventilatory support, enteral and parenteral nutrition, administration of antibiotics and pharmacological therapies (steroids, surfactants and antibiotics), (Postiaux et al, 2018;Legge et al, 2019). The lower the gestational age and birth weight, the greater the tendency to use these procedures and interventions (Primozic et al, 2014).…”

“…Besides, pacifier suction was associated with overjet and posterior crossbite but not with anterior crossbite and crowding. These results are plausible 10,13 . Moreover, a pacifier was adequately inserted in the model as a mediator variable, as some different indirect pathways through pacifier suction were tested.…”

“…The prevalence of overbite and of diastemas was significantly greater in the 73 preterm patients than in the 41 patients born at term. Primozic et al [52], on comparing the prevalence of malocclusions in a group of 80 premature infants with a birth weight of less than 2500 g versus a control group of 113 patients born at term and with normal birth weight, recorded no statistically significant differences between the two groups.…”
