Design disciplines have a long history of creating well-integrated solutions to challenges which are complex, uncertain and contested by multiple stakeholders. Society faces similar challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, so design methods hold much potential. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with sustainability science. To advance this integration, we examine the process of designing MetaMAP: an interactive graphic tool for collaborating to understand social–ecological systems and design well-integrated solutions. MetaMAP was created using Research through Design methods which integrate creative and scientific thinking. By applying design thinking, researchers and practitioners from different backgrounds undertook multiple cycles of problem framing, solution development, testing and reflection. The testing was highly collaborative involving over 150 people from diverse disciplines in workshops, case studies, interviews and critique. Reflecting on this process, we discuss design principles and opportunities for integrating design thinking with sustainability science to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1007/s11625-018-0618-6) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Stakeholder participation is a fundamental component of many states' and local agencies' fisheries legislations worldwide. The European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), as one example, increasingly adopted a holistic approach to managing marine living resources. An important component of such an ecosystem-based management approach is the consideration of knowledge, values, needs and social interactions of stakeholders in decision-making processes. However, despite that stakeholder participation is a widely used term, a great variety of definitions exist, which often cause misunderstanding. Stakeholder participation is often used as part of conducting research on stakeholders but not in the context of their participation in resource management. Here, we present the results of a comprehensive literature review on the topic stakeholder participation in coastal and marine fisheries. We identified 286 scientific publications in Web of Science of which 50 were relevant for our research questions. Publications were analysed regarding (i) definition of stakeholder participation, (ii) analysis of participating stakeholders, (iii) applied participatory methods and (iv) intention for participation. Stakeholder types addressed in the publications included, e.g. fishery (fishers and direct representatives, N = 48), politics (policymakers and managers, N = 31), science (N = 25) and environmental nongovernmental organizations (eNGOs, N = 24). In total, 24 publications labelled their studies as stakeholder participation, while stakeholders were only used as a study object. We conclude that improving science and the practice of including stakeholders in the management of coastal and marine fisheries requires definitions of who is considered a stakeholder and the form of participation applied.

El manejo pesquero en el noroeste de México debe reconocer plenamente a la pesca como parte de un sistema socio-ecológico. Este estudio describe la evolución y situación del manejo, incluyendo la dinámica entre instituciones de manejo y organizaciones conservacionistas, resaltando oportunidades y retos para alcanzar la sustentabilidad ecológica y social. En este contexto, el reconocimiento de la pesca artesanal como actividad social además de económica, facilitaría la evolución de los esquemas de gobernanza y manejo para empatarlos con los objetivos sociales. Ello permite abordar de lleno temas de suma importancia, incluyendo los retos de las comunidades pesqueras indígenas, o los impactos anticipados del cambio climático. El conocimiento científico y la experiencia acumulados en cinco décadas representan una gran capacidad para desarrollar estrategias novedosas para transitar hacia la sustentabilidad del sistema. El éxito de este proceso dependerá de la habilidad de consolidar una visión unificada sobre los beneficios deseados, en especial para las comunidades pesqueras.
