Merauke is one of seventeen districts selected for strengthening beef cattle breeding activities to provide livestock germs, especially for local livestock, through domestic procurement. The sustainability of domestic beef production supplies must be supported by the availability of quality beef breeds. Superior beef cattle are one of the determining factors and have a strategic value in the effort to develop beef cattle. Criteria for evaluating the quality of cattle breeds, including body size or morphology, health and defects in livestock, are in accordance with Indonesian national standards for good beef cattle breeding guidelines. Selection of cattle breeds is done by the traditional breeders community only by visually paying attention to the size of cattle. This study aims to develop decision support tools for farmers in selecting prospective high-quality beef cattle, to analyze the criteria data for cattle using a combination of two methods; AHP and SMART, that alternative solutions can be obtained that will be recommended to farmers. The local beef cattle of Merauke that are used as research samples are PO cattle, system provides information on bull superior which farmers can use as supporting information in making decisions.

Sustainable growth of the agricultural production system demands the availability of right technical inputs about the weather, crop, land, fertilizers, and irrigation at the right time. To disseminate useful information to farmers in an effective and timely manner, many research initiatives have been undertaken by various government and private agencies’ in India to develop decision support and information dissemination (DSID) systems. This paper appraises fifteen number of such systems that are developed in India in the last decade. The appraisal discusses the (i) user information (type of users, participation method and level of skill level), (ii) system information (developing agency, system type, interface, supported application domain and outcome), (iii) system design specification (input/output, data collection method, architecture, user connectivity means), (iv) system development technologies (development technologies and tools), (v) system response (support delivery method, recommendation mechanism, response time) and, (vi) system services (user response, social and economic benefits). Considering all the above mentioned factors, summary sheets have been prepared and analyzed on the basis of normalized weights assigned to each aspect. As a result of analysis, criteria/method for evaluation of system quality (on the basis of support, satisfaction and perceived usefulness) has been formulated. Furthermore, the paper also investigates various challenges that need to be addressed to build effective and efficient DSID systems. Considering the fact that the presented appraisal is somewhat more focused towards technical, social and user oriented aspects, the authors believe that this appraisal will help technologists, researchers, and developers to understand the research initiatives and associated challenges that need attention with respect to the Indian context.

The major cause for decrease in the quality and amount of agricultural productivity is plant diseases. Farmers encounter great difficulties in detecting and controlling plant diseases. Thus, it is of great importance to diagnose the plant diseases at early stages so that appropriate and timely action can be taken by the farmers to avoid further losses.The project focuses on the approach based on image processing for detection of diseases of soybean plants. The soybean images are captured using mobile camera having resolution greater than 2 mega pixels. The purpose of the proposed project is to provide inputs for the Decision Support System (DSS), which is developed for providing advice to the farmers as and when require over mobile internet. Our proposed work classifies the images of soybean leaves as healthy and diseased using Support Vector Machine (SVM). The algorithm comprises of four major steps: image acquisition, extracting the leaf from complex background, statistical analysis and classification. The pre-processing step includes conversion from RGB to HSV (Hue Saturation Value) color space. For extracting the region of interest (ROI) from the original image, multithresholding is used. The color based and cluster based methods are used for segmentation. The algorithm uses Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) technique which automatically recognizes the plant species based on the leaf shape. The SVM classifier proves its ability in automatic and accurate classification of images. Finally, it can be concluded from the experimental results that this approach can classify the leaves with an average accuracy of 93.79%. The proposed system will enable the farmers to get advice from the agricultural experts with minimal efforts.
