As such, there are many published N budgets for coastal systems, but few have directly measured rates of denitrification (e.g., Yoon and Benner 1992;Tuominen et al 1998;Eyre and Mckee 2002) or N burial (Eyre 1995) and even fewer have directly measured rates of denitrification and burial (Boynton et al 1995;Deutsch et al 2010), despite these two pathways being important internal sinks for N.
