The efficiency of TiO2-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been limited because charge transfer is not fully achieved, and the injected electrons always recombine with the acceptor species before the electrode can collect them. The novel device architecture of offering graded bands into the TiO2 photoanode network of DSSCs is presented to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Mono (x %) as well as graded (w–x–y–z %) W-doped TiO2 films are prepared to form intermediate bands in the bandgap of TiO2. A significant enhancement in the PCE is achieved when mono x % W-TiO2 films are tested as the photoanode of the DSSCs. Furthermore, DSSCs with band-engineered W-TiO2 cascade layer exhibit significant photovoltaic performance showing graded carrier transport to current collector. In particular, a graded 1–5–7–9 W cascade film exhibits the highest photovoltaic performance of 11.30% without decreasing the open-circuit voltage, which is 48% higher than pristine DSSCs without a blocking layer. This graded carrier transport suggests an innovative route toward harvesting solar energy.

Summary In this work, we propose a homoleptic ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(dabpy)3]Cl2 (RDAB3) containing amine functionalized electron donating anchoring units for DSSCs. The DSSCs were co‐sensitized by coumarin‐based thiophene (CT) and indole (CI) units. The presence of four ancillary amine groups in RDAB3 influences its photovoltaic performance and the introduction of coumarin‐based co‐sensitizers significantly enhances the efficiency. The fabricated DSSCs were explored by UV‐Visible absorption, photocurrent‐voltage assessments, and impedance spectral studies. Co‐sensitized DSSCs showed an improved photovoltaic efficiency than the device sensitized by RDAB3 alone. Under optimized condition, the device made up of RDAB3+CI exhibited a high Jsc = 9.9 mA/cm2 with Voc of 0.7 V, fill factor of 0.773, and solar to power conversion efficiency of 5.35% in standard global AM 1.5 solar irradiation. This performance is found to be higher than the DSSC sensitized with RDAB3 (η = 3.84%) fabricated under same circumstances.

The efficacy of aniline and carbazole‐based sensitizers used in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is correlated with the trends in density functional theory (DFT) based charge transfer (CT) and non‐linear optical (NLO) properties since both DSSC and NLO properties highly rely on CT properties. The aniline‐based donors showed a higher degree of planarity over carbazole‐based donor sensitizers. This improved planarity in aniline‐based sensitizers is attributed to efficient charge transfer and higher dipole moment. The efficient CT within the sensitizers is confirmed with bond‐length alternation (BLA), bond order alternation (BOA), and quinoid character (QC). A direct correlation of band‐gap (EG) with μ, ω, η, and Γ is witnessed. Time‐dependent DFT (TD‐DFT) results of vertical excitation demonstrated similar trends that are observed practically. Indeed, we observed a direct correlation between α and β and the experimentally observed DSSC efficiency. DFT and TD‐DFT methods, linear, employed for computing the CT and linear and DSSC properties as implemented in Gaussian 09. NLO properties were simulated through single‐point polar calculations. B3LYP and PBE1PBE functionals were used for geometry optimization. The linear and NLO properties were determined in various functionals, that is, global hybrid and range‐separated hybrid functionals. A polarizable continuum model (PCM) was used for solvation studies. To understand the realistic picture of the dye@TiO2 cluster, dye bound on TiO2 clusters were optimized using a LANL2DZ basis set specifically for the Ti atom.
