This study investigates the impact of several demographic factors (gender, age, marital status, and position, number of children and employment of the spouse) on work-family conflict and family-work conflict. The study includes the employees in manufacturing and service sectors in Lagos. According to the results in this study, the level of work-family conflict of males and females is high, and no statistically meaningful difference is found between their means. Logistic regression analysis shows that the log of odds of males experiencing work-family conflict is negatively correlated with education and job tenure, but positively correlated with marital status. The log of odds of females experiencing work-family conflict is negatively correlated with education whereas it is positively correlated with marital status. Job tenure has an impact on family-work conflict of males, and age of children and having to care elderly parents are noted to have an impact on family-work conflict of females.

Salience and conflict of work and family roles among employed men and women

The aim of this research was to determine the salience of work and family roles and to study the connection between role salience and the interference of different types of roles among working men and women. Self-assessment measurement scales were applied. The research involved 206 participants; 103 employed married couples from different regions of Croatia. The results show that roles closely connected to family are considered the most salient. However, men are mostly dedicated behaviourally to the role of a worker. Women dedicate more time and energy to the roles of a spouse, a parent, and a family member whereas men are more oriented towards the leisurite role. The highest level of conflict was perceived when it comes to work disturbing leisure. Gender differences appeared only for work-to-marriage conflict, with men reporting higher conflict than women. The research found proof of only some low correlations between the salience of different types of roles and work-family conflict.

Este estudo buscou explorar em dois contextos, Brasil e Estados Unidos, diferenças e semelhanças na expressão do conflito trabalho-família, bem como aspectos relacionais e preditivos desse construto a partir das variáveis: sucesso de carreira, estresse no trabalho, satisfação com a vida, satisfação com a família e satisfação com o relacionamento. O estudo contou com 388 participantes (184 norte-americanos e 204 brasileiros), os quais responderam um questionário on-line com diferentes escalas psicológicas. Os resultados apontaram para ambos os contextos a preditividade do estresse no trabalho para conflito trabalho-família. Especificamente na amostra de norte-americanos, dimensões de sucesso de carreira foram preditores de família interferindo no trabalho. No grupo de brasileiros, aspectos de família interferindo no trabalho se relacionaram diretamente com satisfação no relacionamento amoroso.
