A comparative study of slow and fast suryanamaskar on physiological function

Abstract: Background:Numerous scientific studies have reported beneficial physiological changes after short- and long-term yoga training. Suryanamaskar (SN) is an integral part of modern yoga training and may be performed either in a slow or rapid manner. As there are few studies on SN, we conducted this study to determine the differential effect of 6 months training in the fast and slow versions.Materials and Methods:42 school children in the age group of 12–16 years were randomly divided into two groups of 21 each. “…4.3 Effect of short term yoga on VC, FEV1% and PEFR: Vital capacity (VC), FEV1% and PEFR showed significant improvement following yoga training. Yoga training increases strength of respiratory muscles contributing to improvement in pulmonary functions 12 . Our results are similar to findings of other studies by Joshi et al 14 , Pansare et al 15 who observed improvements in pulmonary function following a yoga practice of longer duration.…”

“…The results suggested that Surya namaskar has positive physiological benefits as evidenced by an improvement in pulmonary functions, respiratory pressures, hand grip strength and endurance, and resting cardiovascular parameters. It also demonstrated the differences between Surya namaskar when performed in a slow versus fast manner, concluding that the effects of fast version are similar to physical aerobic exercises, whereas the effects of slow version are similar to those of yoga training [4] .…”

“…This happened because the yoga relaxation instructor also performed a 9-step Suryanamaskar movement modified with other movements. Suryanamaskar has positive physiological benefits as evidenced by improvement of pulmonary function, respiratory pressures, hand grip strength, and endurance, and resting cardiovascular parameters (Bhavanani, Udupa, & Madanmohan, 2011). Also, yoga reduces perceived stress and improves adaptive autonomic response to stress in healthy pregnant women (Satyapriya, Nagendra, Nagarathna, & Padmalatha, 2009).…”
