A comparative scanning electron microscopy study between hand instrument, ultrasonic scaling and erbium doped:Yttirum aluminum garnet laser on root surface: A morphological and thermal analysis

Abstract: Background and Objectives:Scaling and root planing is one of the most commonly used procedures for the treatment of periodontal diseases. Removal of calculus using conventional hand instruments is incomplete and rather time consuming. In search of more efficient and less difficult instrumentation, investigators have proposed lasers as an alternative or as adjuncts to scaling and root planing. Hence, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of erbium doped: Yttirum aluminum garnet (Er:… Show more

“…Similar to our roughness findings, we found that changing the ultrasonic scaler type did not exert any significant influence on root-surface wear at the same power settings and application angles (p > 0.05). Although there are studies in the literature investigating the wear effects of ultrasonic instruments on root surfaces under different operating conditions [12,25,32,34,35], until now, no study has specifically compared the wear impacts of magnetostrictive and ultrasonic scalers under the same circumstances.…”

“…In systemically healthy patients with mild to moderate gingivitis, a fixed combination of four EOs demonstrated clear antiplaque and antigingivitis effects 22‐24,35,36 . Because ultrasonic debridement is believed to be an appropriate alternative to manual instrumentation, 37,38 the therapeutic approach selected for the present study involved the daily use of EO after ultrasonic debridement in a group of patients with diabetes. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, having a placebo as the comparator, the design of the present study also answered for the first time whether the adjunctive use of EO provides additional benefits based on different gingivitis indicators, even in the presence of diabetes.…”

“…However, the possibility of obtaining results that are efficient and safe is still questionable today (BORGHETTI et al, 1987;MISHRA, PRAKASH, 2013).…”
