Scaling using ultrasonic dental equipment was performed on 20 teeth extracted from dogs with advanced periodontal disease, under clinical indication. The surgical extraction of the teeth, which already showed mobility, carried out by means of a lever, tried not to touch the radicular surface which would be assessed. The mesial surface of the cervical root region was used for verifying the effect of the ultrasonic scaling and the distal surface was maintained intact for control. After treatment, the teeth were sectioned, separating the region of interest, and these were fixed in glutaraldehyde, dried with a critical point dryer and metallized for observation under electronic scanning microscopy. The presence of plaque, biofilm and rod cells on the non-treated surface was quite characterized. On the surface submitted to treatment by ultrasound, it was possible to see areas with the removal of all the dental calculus, and areas with exposed naked dentine and showing open dentinal tubules. It was possible to observe also the occasional presence of bio-film and rod cells penetrating the dentinal tubules. No harm to the dentine was observed. Thus, ultrasonic scaling showed to be useful in the purpose of removing plaque and can be better developed. Future studies are necessary to establish a comparison with other methods of scaling.

A ausência congênita de molares foi observada em cães de pequeno porte; a ausência patológica predominou na região dos pré-molares; houve maior frequência de dentes supranumerários na arcada superior, predominando os molares; foram observadas raízes supranumerárias em pré-molares e molares superiores e inferiores; e grande número de raízes fusionadas, predominando no segundo pré-molar inferior.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a GnRH synthetic analog, as an estrous inducer in female dogs when administered during the anestrous phase, and to evaluate the pregnancy rate achieved through natural copulation. For this purpose, ten female dogs of different breeds were used. The subjects received buserelin by intramuscular injections at a dose of 2,1mcg when female dogs weighed up to 10kg (Group 1) and of 4,2mcg when the dogs weighed above 10kg (Group 2). Of the ten subjects, only three presented estrus after a single injection of buserelin: two dogs from Group 1 and one dog from Group 2 on average 7±1.29 days. The remaining seven dogs were given a second dose of buserelin, equal to the first administration. Of these, three belonged to Group 1 and four to Group 2. Four of these dogs exhibited clinical signs of estrus within, on average 9±7.3 days from the second injection. The seven female dogs that did enter estrus were fertilized successfully through natural copulation. The administration of buserelin was effective in inducing estrus in female dogs during the anestrous phase, with a maximum of two administrations.
Background: Platynosomum spp. it is a trematode that has a predilection for the liver and biliary tissues whose infection is acquired through the ingestion of metacercarian gecko viscera. Felines are the definitive hosts and clinical signs are variable. The diagnosis is through history, hematological and biochemical exams, ultrasound, bile cytology or histopathology. The treatment of choice is cholecystoduodenostomy. This paper aims to report the case of a cat who was treated at the Uberaba Veterinary Hospital with chronic cholangitis secondary to platinosomosis, but there was a transfusion reaction and she died.Case: A 4-year-old, uncastrated SRD cat was treated at the Uberaba Veterinary Hospital complaining of severe episodes of vomiting three days ago, hyporexia and darkened urine. The general clinical examination showed moderate dehydration, jaundice and hepatomegaly. The animal was hospitalized for better investigation of its condition. Increased values of ALT, alkaline phosphatase and all bilirubins were observed. Ultrasound showed liver suggestive of liver disease and steatosis, and gallbladder without alteration. During hospitalization, she remained jaundiced and hypoxic, and the esophageal tube was placed. The initial clinical suspicion was cholangiohepatitis. Liver biopsy and cholecystoduodenostomy were then suggested, with refusal by the tutor. The ultrasound was repeated and showed the same alterations described, besides cholangitis. Stool examination was negative for Platynosomum spp. and positive for Isospora spp. The patient was treated with anthelmintic for three days and received supportive treatment for another week until the tutor authorized cholecystoduodenostomy. During surgery, cholecystocentesis was performed and the parasite Platynosomum spp. in adult form. After four days, a new blood count was done and the animal was still anemic and the blood transfusion was chosen. The patient died within moments of the transfusion procedure.Discussion: Platynosomum spp. it is a trematode whose ultimate host is the domestic felines and inhabits liver, gallbladder and bile ducts causing biliary obstruction and even fibrosis. In the present report, the tutor reports that the cat had several episodes of vomiting and reduced appetite. Feline jaundice is normal in cases where cholestasis causes a two to three-fold increase in bilirubinemia from normal values. The increase was verified in the analyzed feline. Physical examination revealed jaundice and abdominal palpation suggestive of hepatomegaly. Ultrasound suggested cholangiohepatitis. Without improvement, liver biopsy and cholecystoduodenostomy were suggested, with tutor refusal. After repeated ultrasound, the images suggested cholangitis and the stool examination was negative for Platynosomum spp. The definitive diagnosis for this disease is through liver biopsy, visualization of the operated eggs or the adult form of the parasite in feces or bile as suggested in this case. However, in cases where there is total obstruction of the bile ducts, the eggs are not eliminated in the digestive system and the examination may be false negative as in this case. After the exams, the cat was submitted to cholecystoduodenostomy surgery where gallbladder puncture was performed for microscopic evaluation, and the parasite Platynosomum spp. in adult form. Most cats have blood type A, but even when the donor has the same blood type, cross-reaction may occur, so compatibility testing should be performed prior to any transfusion, thus reducing the risk of transfusion reactions. The patient died within moments of the transfusion procedure.
ABSTRACT:The experiment assessed the cardiorespiratory and hemogasometric profiles in female cats under sevoflurane resulting from the administration of tramadol. Twenty clinically healthy adult female cats separated equally into two groups: control group (CG) and tramadol group (TG) were sedated with intramuscular acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg), followed by anesthetic induction intravenous propofol (5mg/kg). After endotracheal intubation, animals were maintained on sevoflurane in oxygen administered using a non-rebreathing (Baraka) circuit. The oxygen flow-rate was maintained at 2 L per minute. Fifteen minutes after induction, either 0.05 ml/kg 0.9% saline solution or 2mg/kg tramadol were administered, both intramuscularly, to the animals in CG and TG, respectively. The period of time immediately previous to these administrations was considered as moment zero (T0). The variables were again measured 15 minutes later (T15) and subsequently in 15 minute intervals for a total of sixty minutes (T30, T45 and T60). The results were statistically evaluated through variance analysis of repeated measures (ANOVA) followed by a Tukey test or Student t-test with the nullity hypothesis rejection level set to p<0.05. The use of tramadol reduced cardiac frequency (CF), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). There was a reduction of the respiratory frequency (RF) and an elevation of the PaCO 2 . The body temperature (ºC) lowered in both groups throughout the experiment. The results allow us to conclude that tramadol in cats anesthetized with sevoflurane does not undergo significant cardiorespiratory and blood-gas changes, although there are significant differences in some parameters between groups, all results remained within feline standard physiological values.

O presente trabalho consistiu na aná-lise da força de resistência à micro-tração de amostras de ossos corticais de coelho preservadas em diversos meios por até 180 dias e a fresco. Os resultados revelaram que a resistência e o tempo de preservação apresentaram uma relação inversamente proporcional, significando que, quanto maior o tempo de preservação, menor a resistência física avaliada no ensaio biomecânico de resistência à micro-tração. The present study consisted in the analyses of the resistance power to the micro-traction of samples of rabbit cortical bones preserved in several means for up to 180 days and fresh. The results showed that the resistance and the preservation time presented an inversely proportional relation, meaning that, the longer the time of preservation, the shorter the physical resistance evaluated in the biomechanical rehearsal of resistance to the micro-traction. The glycerin has presented lower values in relation to the resistance test, showing, after 30 days, only 24.58% of the present power in the fresh bone, and by 180 days, 1.76%. The samples submitted to autoclavation also showed low values by the end of the experiment, while they remained with just 12.31% of the power present in the fresh bone. The bones preserved in homologous plasma, Dakin liquid and the ones cryopreserved showed the best levels of resistance at the end of the experiment, remaining, respectively with 82.47, 70.34 and 66.72% of the maximum power, while compared with the resistance of the fresh bones. The conclusion is that the choice of methodology and time of preservation interfered directly in the biomechanics of the cortical bones, promoting decrease of the resistance capacity to the traction along the period of preservation.
