A COAMPS™ reanalysis for the Eastern Pacific: Properties of the diurnal sea breeze along the central California coast

Abstract: [1] This paper introduces and evaluates a new atmospheric model reanalysis product for the U.S. west coast from the Navy's operational Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS 2 ) implemented on a triply nested 81/27/9 km grid. Wind measurements from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) moorings are used to evaluate a two year time series of the model output from October 1998 to October 2000. The model accurately reproduced both the landward decrease in the large-scale wind fiel… Show more

“…Indeed, QuikSCAT observations are not valid on a band of 50 km from the coast. Nevertheless, coastal winds were extrapolated from offshore; short scale coastal variations, such as those observed in the California Current System [Kindle et al, 2002;Capet et al, 2004], are not present in the model wind forcing.…”

“…For this reason, the focus of numerical simulations was on accurate model predictions in the upper 100 m of the water column (especially predictions of velocity fields). To achieve this objective, the following important observations and forcings were uti- (Hodur 1997;Kindle et al 2002). (b) High-frequency coastal radar (CODAR) surface currents were assimilated into hydrodynamic models based on the scheme described in Paduan and Shulman (2004 (Fig.…”

“…The work by Kindle et al (2002) utilized the observed winds from the MBARI moorings in Monterey Bay to help validate the COAMPS model winds and to demonstrate the ability of the finest COAMPS grid (9km) to accurately represent the diurnal sea breeze along the central California coast. Based on this study, a new understanding of the behavior of the sea breeze along the US west coast has been provided.…”
