AbstractMixed matrix membrane (MMM), formed by dispersing fillers in polymer matrix, has attracted researchers’ attention due to its outstanding performance compared to polymeric membrane. However, its widespread use is limited due to high cost of the commercial filler which leads to the studies on alternative low-cost fillers. Recent works have focused on utilizing agricultural wastes as potential fillers in fabricating MMM. A membrane with good permeability and selectivity was able to be prepared at low cost. The objective of this review article is to compile all the available information on the potential agricultural wastes as fillers in fabricating MMM for gas separation application. The gas permeation mechanisms through polymeric and MMM as well as the chemical and physical properties of the agricultural waste fillers were also reviewed. Additionally, the economic study and future direction of MMM development especially in gas separation field were discussed.

Due to the global menace caused by carbon emissions from environmental, anthropogenic, and industrial processes, it has become expedient to consider the use of systems, with high trapping potentials for these carbon-based compounds. Several prior studies have considered the use of amines, activated carbon, and other solid adsorbents. Advances in carbon capture research have led to the use of ionic liquids, enzyme-based systems, microbial filters, membranes, and metal-organic frameworks in capturing CO2. Therefore, it is common knowledge that some of these systems have their lapses, which then informs the need to prioritize and optimize their synthetic routes for optimum efficiency. Some authors have also argued about the need to consider the use of hybrid systems, which offer several characteristics that in turn give synergistic effects/properties that are better compared to those of the individual components that make up the composites. For instance, some membranes are hydrophobic in nature, which makes them unsuitable for carbon capture operations; hence, it is necessary to consider modifying properties such as thermal stability, chemical stability, permeability, nature of the raw/starting material, thickness, durability, and surface area which can enhance the performance of these systems. In this review, previous and recent advances in carbon capture systems and sequestration technologies are discussed, while some recommendations and future prospects in innovative technologies are also highlighted.

The separation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the flue gas is a challenging one in terms of the energy penalty. The development of a cryogenic or lowtemperature CO 2 separation method helps to overcome the energy penalty associated with CO 2 separation. In this study, a preliminary investigation is carried out in a theoretically modified Linde process which can be used for CO 2 separation from a gas mixture containing CO 2 and N 2 . A cryogenic cooling process is also studied for CO 2 separation of the same quality of the gas mixture. The compression work and cooling loads in each case are analyzed using Aspen Plus software. The effect of CO 2 volume in the mixture, compressor efficiency, and compressor discharge pressure on the energy consumption is studied for both the theoretically modified Linde and the cryogenic cooling processes, and the results are compared between them. The results indicated in the CO 2 separation by the cooling process are better than the modified Linde process. The energy penalty shows for 20% CO 2 composition of separation by the cooling process with the single-stage compression is lower by around 123.9% and 128.8% in terms of compression work and compressor cooling load, respectively, than those of the modified Linde process working in a single-stage compression. The separation by the cooling process refrigeration effect is 15.9% more than in the modified Linde process.
