“…This archive contains a plethora of snapshots of the near-surface wind fields associated with a wide variety of synoptic-scale and mesoscale atmospheric phenomena. Some examples of the phenomena imaged within the archive include polar lows (Sikora et al 2000), synoptic-scale fronts (Young et al 2005), boundary layer convection (Babin et al 2003), gap flows (Liu et al 2006), vortex streets and atmospheric gravity waves (Li 2004), and barrier jets (Loescher et al 2006;Colle et al 2006).…”

“…Estimation to long return periods is necessarily constrained in this manner; yet, as discussed by Sobey and Orloff (1995), "extrapolations of inadequate data will continue to be made." In fact, Morton et al (1997) have estimated values of SWH 100 based on only 4 years of measurements in the North Sea, and Liu et al (2006) have drawn climatologic inferences based on simulations of even shorter durations.…”

“…A more likely source of errors may be inaccuracies in NOAA's wind fields in the near-shore areas arising from the presence of islands and other subgrid-scale topographical features (our sub-domain simulations were based on an interpolation of the original NOAA winds available on a 25-km grid). Until a regional wind prediction scheme (e.g., Liu et al 2006) is installed, however, we have no alternative. Hanna et al (2006) have reported some overestimation by the NOAA wind model in the Gulf of Mexico, whereas Rogers et al (2007) report that these wind fields were comparable to other modeled wind products in the Southern California Bight.…”

“…The system also incorporates a regional atmospheric circulation model (RAMS; Pielke et al 1992;Liu et al 2006) and a coupled ocean circulation model (extended PWS nowcast/forecast system, EPWS/NFS; Fig. 1), both of which are able to provide up to a 72-h forecast.…”
