Objective:To understand the infl uence of play in the care process as perceived by children with cancer. Method: A descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study conducted in a children's cancer unit in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data were collected between October 2013 and January 2014 by means of photographic records and semi-structured interviews with eight children, and content analysis with emphasis on two categories: Auxiliary instruments during play; and The infl uence of play in the process of care. Results: Recreational activities involve watching television, using computers, games and toys, drawing, the playroom and the clown, which provide fun, feelings of joy, distraction and interaction with other people. Conclusion: There are several activities at the hospital that are considered play-related and, for the children, they all benefi t their care process. Keywords: Play therapy. Oncology nursing. Child, hospitalized. RESUMO Objetivos:Compreender a infl uência do lúdico para o processo de cuidar, na percepção de crianças com câncer. Método: Estudo qualitativo, exploratório descritivo, realizado em um setor de oncopediatria em Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados entre os meses de outubro de 2013 e janeiro de 2014, por meio de registros fotográfi cos e entrevista semiestruturada, com oito crianças, e analisados conforme a Análise de Conteúdo, destacando-se duas categorias de discussão: Os instrumentos auxiliares na ludicidade; e A infl uência do lúdico no processo de cuidar. Resultados: As atividades lúdicas envolvem o assistir à televisão, o uso de computadores, os jogos e os brinquedos, a realização de desenhos, a brinquedoteca e o palhaço, os quais proporcionam diversão, sentimentos de alegria, distração e interação com outras pessoas. Conclusão: Existem diversas atividades, no hospital, entendidas como lúdicas, todas as quais, para a criança, proporcionam benefí-cios para o seu processo de cuidar. Palavras-chave: Ludoterapia. (a) Conceição Antunes (b) Susana Caires (c) Valorizando a importância dos aspetos psicossociais da internação pediátrica, e procurando a criança "por detrás" do corpo doente, vários hospitais têm investido na humanização de espaços, rotinas e atmosfera, procurando promover ambientes acolhedores e atenuantes das experiências negativas vividas pela criança (e família) durante a internação. A par de uma tentativa de sistematização de alguns dos esforços realizados até a data em nível da definição do conceito de "humanização" -nomeadamente em contexto pediátrico -, reflete-se acerca das potencialidades de alguns programas existentes nesse contexto, nomeadamente aqueles que aliam a arte, a recreação, o lazer e o humor como meios privilegiados de comunicação e expressão. Entre estes, destaca-se a intervenção dos palhaços de hospital, como promotora da livre expressão da criança, da sua autonomia, criatividade, exploração e conhecimento do mundo e consequente desenvolvimento psicossocial.Palavras-chave: Pediatria. Introduction: Play has become an object of study in various sectors of society, as it is viewed as an innate, spontaneous activity that is critical for a child's physical, social, emotional and cognitive development, which facilitates communication, socialisation and adaptation to environments and people. During hospitalisation, children feel vulnerable as they have to cope with strange carers, invasive and painful procedures. Barriers to their regular activities tend to make the situation worse. Objectives: To describe the child's view of his/her playfulness in the hospital environment and investigate the social representation of a hospital playroom for children exposed to the story-drawing technique. Methods: This qualitative exploratory research used storydrawing as a tool for data collection with a sample of 12 children aged 6 to 11 years, while they were hospitalised. Data analysis was supported by a literature review and direct observation, which allowed the researchers to draw relationships between theory, the research hypotheses and the data collected. Findings: The children's construction and representation of playfulness while in hospital was directly related to the playroom, since most of them reported not conceiving of the possibility to play in bed or elsewhere in the hospital. Soon the playroom was further viewed as a place for socialising and recovering from illness as they approximated this environment to their reality in an attempt to make it a closest-as-possible representation of their homes. It was observed that play changed the children's preconceived ideas of the hospital, as they began to view the playroom as an environment in which they felt able to play and consequently well. Their story-drawings contextualised symbolically their current hospitalisation situation and became a scaffolding tool for their emotional well-being. Conclusions: The playroom can effectively aid hospitalised children to cope better with the new situation and support the restoration of their health. Play is an emotionally protective factor for children during hospitalisation. Although in Brazil it is now mandatory for health institutions to have a playroom with paediatric care, this breakthrough policy is still challenging for some institutions with respect to being staffed with engaged health professionals and establishing routine procedures.
