A 7‐Month Study of Sulcular Fluid Flow in the Assessment of Healing after Debridement of Deep Pockets

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to assess the value of sulcular fluid flow (SFF) measurements in evaluation of the healing of deep periodontal pockets after scaling and root planing. Fourteen adult patients with advanced periodontal disease received supragingival prophylaxis and instructions in oral hygiene. Immediately after baseline examination, meticulous scaling and root planing were performed. One to five selected pockets per patient were monitored on Days 0, 30, 120 and 210. Subgingival microbial p… Show more

“…In this study, the microbial flora found in pockets deeper than 4 m was also modified by the initial periodontal treatment. Significant diminution of the bacterial flora due to SRP has been demonstrated by others (Slots et al 1979, Hakkarainen et al 1986, Van Winkelhoff et al 1988). The modification of clinical parameters such as BOP and PPD is associated with the decreasing number of anaerobic organisms.…”

“…Peri‐implant plaque index (PI), BOP, and PD were measured on three buccal (mesio‐buccal, mid‐buccal, and disto‐buccal) and three lingual surfaces (mesio‐lingual, mid‐lingual, and disto‐lingual) per implant. Peri‐implant PD was gauged to the nearest millimeter using a plastic graded probe .…”

“…BOP can result in a loss of attachment if it is observed continually (12,16). However, without BOP, the periodontal condition can be maintained (15).…”

“…It is generally accepted that an initial treatment including professional toothbrushing and scaling and root planning (SRP) leads to a reduction in inflammation (12,27), which might be manifested by a reduction in BOP. The loss of attachment is more likely to occur at the periodontal sites exhibiting persistent bleeding upon probing (BOP) (14,16).…”
