A 1-year prospective survey of candidemia in Italy and changing epidemiology over one decade

Abstract: The results of this latest survey confirm the high rate of candidemia in Italy and show changes in some of the epidemiological tracts, such as aging of infected patients, increased proportion of C. glabrata infections, increased diagnosis in medical wards, and improvement in patients' survival.

“…These data partly agree with those of other studies, in which C. albicans was the species most frequently isolated in the bloodstream in Europe and more specifically Italy (50 %) [5]. On the other hand, the incidence of C. parapsilosis complex was reported to range between 14 and 23 % [18,19]. In recent years very few data have been available concerning the significantly enhanced trend for isolation of C. parapsilosis complex as a causative agent for candidaemia [24].…”

“…To stress this observation, our data were found to be comparable to those recorded in another 1500-bed hospital in Rome in the period 2008-2010 (2.53 episodes/1000 admissions) [5], even though we did not consider onco-haematologically derived episodes. Accordingly to the literature, candidaemia episodes were mainly recorded in males aged 61-80 years (51.54 %) [5,18,19]. In agreement with Marchetti et al…”

“…En su mayoría, la candidemia representó un evento tardío dentro de la tercera semana de hospitalización y más de la mitad de los casos se encontraban en UPC al momento del diagnóstico. Todos estos aspectos son similares a lo antes publicado en la literatura internacional 2,8,10 .…”

“…Currently, Candida parapsilosisis considered as a nosocomial emerging pathogen [33][34][35][36], and its growing resistance to azoles and echinocandins [37][38][39] has put it under the spotlight in the last few years. It is a complex of 3 phenotypically indistinguishable species, but, due to their genetic heterogeneity, it is possible to differentiate them only with molecular techniques [40].…”
